ok heres the deal.. im recording rap vocals. i have a blue dragon fly running into a presonus tube pre, then from there im going into a lexicon alpha usb interface.. which is running into Audacity. Laugh all you want but i get pretty superb sound..

My problem is i have so many vst's but as you all know they can only applied after a track is recorded. i have been digging up whatever i can online to try to figure out how to run vst's through a direct moniter type setup.

i have found vsthost.. and chainer. but is any one familier with the software? will i be able to run my interface into the host then directly out into audacity..
almost as if i bring up the host. and just have to minimize it and record away? if not what are some other possibilities for real time vst? because i just dropped like 300 on antares autotune evo and i cant even bypass with it being in the vst bin.. i should have just got the hardware! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!

Are you looking to record the VST on it's way in? I.e. have the effect applied to the actual audio file during recording or is this strictly for monitoring purposes?

I am not familiar with Audacity or any of the other software that you mention, but many DAWs, Cubase for example, now allow the use of VST's on the inputs for monitoring purposes.

Do you HAVE to do real time processing?

Why not just use the VST's as they were meant to be used?

Please don't post the same question across multiple forums. Choose the appropriate forum to ask your question and post there. I moved the reply from your other thread to here and then deleted the other thread.

Thanks,

Instead of using Audacity why dont you use a program like reaper...you can use VST's while recording and hear how things will sound while you record and monitor.

Audacity is not capable of real-time VST plugin behavior (or any real-time plugin behavior actually). It's a limitation of the software. Partially by design actually (there's licensing conflict issues-which is also why Audacity doesn't do ASIO).

Remember that Audacity is originally designed to be used for editing and analysis, not mixing or even recording, really. You're basically making it do something it wasn't designed to do. This isn't to say that it shouldn't be done, just that you're gonna have hurdles like this one.

The alternative software solution is the best one. Reaper is cheap, and you can still get v0.999 from the Reaper site, which was the last actually free version.

If you're working in the non-commercial domain, you might also consider Kristal Audio Engine (which is a spiritual successor to Cubasis and spiritual precursor to the new Presonus DAW software):

That has a little more flexibility with VST plugins and real-time processing.
