Having fun with some Rush....

Okay, I finally had a chance at home to listen to this.

Vocals remind me of a bootleg I have with Les Claypool (Primus) doing Spirit of Radio no justice. Nasally and uninspired.

Drums, bass, and guitar playing (great lead work :) ) all top notch. The vocalist can sing, just can't sing Rush.

At 3:00 or so I heard you breaking into another Rush cover (which would technically make it a medley?). I always thought Working Man was stretched a bit. maybe bust out with the last half of Finding My Way or something, to give it that roundness of 'early Rush'.

I still think you could do any one of 100 other Rush songs instead. I own all of their material, even some bootleg stuff, all the DVDs, and the only album/commercial release I don't own is their first record. It sucks. They sucked without Neil. Ask Ged or Alex and they'd be the first to admit the band would never have become what it did without him.

I'm kind of ADD, and I often have a hard time concentrating, so I bought one of those mood CDs at Target designed to help you concentrate. (part of it works, part of it puts me to sleep, so I skip that part.)

Anyway, just thought I'd let you know that I accidentally found that looping 'Toejam Soup' actually helps. I don't know what it is, but it works.

You may have another market for your music. :D

Thanks!...glad I could help!

Hey Pinky...I think I'm on the same page as you as far as the 1st album goes...It is very different from the rest of there output ...I think the addition of Neil Pert not only as Drummer but lyricist , really opened up the progression of the band...It is almost like they could have changed the band name between the debut album and Fly By Night...it is that much of a change!I think that the 1st album really is a product of Alex and Geddys influences such as Creem, Zeppelin, The Who etc.. its kinda blues based hard rock. The covers only album they put out recently really reflected this early hard rock sound in my opinion with covers like summertime blues, crossroads etc..The funny thing is they still play Working Man at almost every concert...I think its just a nod to there beginnings ...they do change it up a lot and throw a reggae feel in or something to make it interesting....
As far as our vocals go...I think early Geddy , or any Geddy , vocals are pretty tough, our Bass player is pretty green to also singing lead and playing at the same time , but he's getting better and better at it..that's a cool idea about the medley thing...we have talked about that....
Well I have rambled on enough here...just wanted to say I'm not some deranged , defender of Rush's 1st album or maniac John Rutsy fan(1st drummer)...I just love to play that opening riff in Working Man!! :p

Thanks again for your comments...I love talking Rush!

I'm a HUGE rush fan. i love ALL of their periods--the early stuff, the "madrigal" period, the synthy period (Power Windows is some of their best songwriting) and especially the return to the guitars in the last few albums. I think Signals is an excellent album--it just needed someone else producing it. my favorite album is 2112......although Presto comes in a close 2nd (i love the second side of that one).

My band also does Working Man on occasion, and at gigs it's never failed to please. We've also dabbled with Cygnus X1 (jam), parts of 2112, The Analog Kid, Kid Gloves, Xanadu, the first half of La Villa Strangiato, A Passage to Bangkok and my favorite one to play, Bastille Day.

I'm the only one in our band who can even *approach* Geddy's vocal range, but then again, it's a lot of fun to take some significant liberties with Rush covers. Especially in terms of arrangement and vocals.

i LOVE hearing rush covers. keep it up!

cheers,
wade

Besides Geddy, who really can sing Rush?

Exactly :p.

Anyone ever change the key of a Rush tune, to put it within the range of their (most) vocalist(s)?

One of my favorites is The Enemy Within, which I think would sound great with some modern distortion/heavy guitar work. And it's not in that high of a key, so most singers can manage it.

Anyone see the recent Family Guy episode with Chester Cheetah?

Nice improv's in the guitar solo --- great stuff. Most people forget about the ending guitar bends. At a jam, I added it to the end of Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There and most people's jaws dropped. A few "what the heck was that" and I told them Rush --- cool !!!

RUSH is one of may fave bands to play on guitar.
The first album is a great album to play along to --- every song.
I've been in bands that played In The Mood, What You're Doing and Finding My Way from the first album. Have also recorded Fly By Night and 2112.
I had a friend who sang exactly like Geddy -- even looked like him with the long hair. We'd jam out just about every Rush tune from the 70's.

Yes. Rush does that.

Good job, V-man. Not my favorite Rush tune, but you do the guitars justice.

Circumstances is a tough nut to crack. Keep it up!!
