I am using a Behringer board into a Motu 24i. I am micing a Marshall DSL401 Tube amp with an SM57. I keep getting a very harsh guitar sound. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm posting a link here to two mp3 clips of the guitar sound. Please Help! The first clip is with more distortion and less volume, the second clip is more volume less distortion. My friend Ben is playing guitar so please no comments needed on his playin ha ha. Just need help achieving smoother sound. The placement of the mic is up close to the front of the amp, aimed between the center and edge of the speaker.
The clips have no effects or EQ adjustments. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what you want when you say "smoother". The clips sound like a Strat into a Marshal which is what they are. Other than the obvious, re-positioning the mic, EQ, adding effects, using seperate distortion pedals I dont know what to suggest. Can you be more specific about the sound you want maybe quote an example?

My friend Ben wants to achieve a Punk/Pop sound, I guess you'd call it. He said he's aiming at a Green Day type of sound. Amp sounds like is producing that sound, but not capturing it accurately. Does Green Day use a delay on one channel of guitar panned to one side and one dry track panned the opposite side achieve large guitar sound also?

Ahhhhh.....now you're getting somewhere. Try your question and see what happens. Keep thinking that way and act on your curiosities and you will attain thy sound.....my son! :D

ok, thanx for the response. But still doesn't explain the harshness? Maybe it's my monitors? Nobody else seems to hear it. I use Event 20/20's

Hi Keilson,

I had a chance to listen on my better headphones at home (Sennheiser HD280), and I tend to agree with the general concensus. I think you are getting pretty close to the sound you're looking for.

Have you tried listening on something other than your Events?

Oh, and after having a little time to play with my new DMP3, I can tell you that it is a definite step up in quality from the Behringer pres I was using. It's not night and day, but I can tell, and I don't know crap.

Hopefully this weekend I'll put up some clips on NWR for comparison.

Seeyuh!

thanks for the quick responses guys. Maybe I'm too picky? ha ha. Oh well. Maybe it's because we're used to hearing the guitar in the mix and not by itself all the time. Lame Thrower, definitely post a link to wherever you place those mp3 comparisons. I'm seriously considering the DMP3. So far lowest price I've been offered is $185 no tax, no shipping from 8thsrteet music. Anybody know any better prices?
