I am an MC who wants to get into home recording and producing. I am aware that production is not for everyone but I often get ideas for beats and how the sounds would be layered with no way to make them.

I've tried computer based production (ACID) and I didn't like it.

I want to get into using hardware; what should I start with?

Thanks,

The Deen

it would work..but 1st we need to know your $ limit..cause it can get pricey for some item.. and what you want to do... sample, not sample what.. here is a few to keep in mind..

MPC1000
E-MU MP/XL-7 Command Station (i have the XL-7)
Korg Tritron
Roland 909, 303(its old be still get the job done)
Yamaha RS7000

and their many others..

Yeah, I was looking at those (esp. the MP-7); is the E-MU working well for you?

My budget is pretty low (about 1k)

hardware is an excellent choice, but don't give up too easily on computer programs. there is Propellerhead's Reason and Fruity Loop's FL Studio 5. these programs work a little differently than acid, and the interface maybe a little more motivating. you can also make music in the all in one recording stations with Stienberg's Cubase and with Cakewalk, some people like myself use a combination of both. i started out with software and now i'm incorporating a little hardware but everything get's sequenced back into the computer anyways.

The FL interface was confusing for me (I tried the demo); I am downloading the Reason demo from the Propellerhead site at the moment and I will check that out soon.

myself and a lot of other folks on this forum can easily get you started with FL 5 and with Reason.

I got the XL-7 with the mo phatt, composer, xl-lead and protozoa rom's to add to it..so its workin great for me...I did all other recordings(music on my soundclick page) on a Yamaha RM1X ..but the E-MU sounds are way better and up to standard..

let see you got about 1K..if you dont mind used stuff you can get some goood stuff..i think to MPC1000 is right under a grand..i hear its pretty good as well...just like all the other MPCs.. goto to e-bay and search for these item to see the prices...

E-MU doesnt make the Command Stations anymore..they have went the software route..but just like Jug said..Reasons and Fruity Loops are damn good software programs once you learn them..9th Wonder produces with fruity Loops..

Check out the Buy and Sell Forum

If you didn't like the software approach I would definitely say get an MPC 1000 and a keyboard.

And it just so happens that I am selling my MPC 1000 to go the software route, funny world ain't it.

So feel free to check out the Buy and Sell Forum or just PM if you are interested. I can answer any questions that you have. But I must say it was very easy to pick up on and I also have highlighted all the important info in the manual. Just a thought.

If I had that damn check I'd pick up the MPC, but I won't have mine until Feb. Should be about $1500...maybe more.

Damn it's good to go to school. I take my grant checks and upgrade my studio with em.

look here big daddy, i have the mp-7 and love it but i am currently trying to upgrade to a fantom x6 if you got a g right now hold it and get another couple of hundred it will save you upgrade time down the line. In the mean time i would say get you some software program to bide your time untill you stack your chips. visit this forum frequently and colab with producers while you stack yo chips. You need to put in some time on the pc before you go hardware b-cuz in the end you will have to use both. but if you just dying to spend some cash i have a mk6 for sale. but i would sugggest you stack yo chips 2 g will land you in a comfortable place to not have to suffer some of the ills of the beginners equipment.

I was thinking along those lines as well; maybe a MPC 2500 in the future?

What software should I get in the meantime?
