Happy Pills(mp3)

There is the link above. You can also here the drumkit from hell version at threeafter.com. I layed this drum track down to a click and played along with the song minus the DFHS. Let me know what you think of the sound on the drums more so than anything else.

All toms and snare are through SM57s.
The Kick is a D112 on the inside and a Beta 52A on the outside.
Overheads are AT4041s.
Room mic is a CAD M179.

Here are some pics to go along with this:
Gretsch Renown Maple Image 1
Gretsch Renown Maple Image 2

It's a 6 piece Renown, I have the matching snare but I use a Pork Pie Little Squealer 12X5 snare.

Let me know what you think.

Sounds fine

Sounds just fine in the headphones - nice work. Judging from the pics I would've thought the drum sound would've been much more ambient with all that concrete. Great job on mic placement.

Drums sound realy damn good, man. Everything sounds good. Vocals are awesome. This is a great tune, too....Can't really offer any crticism, it's really freaking heavy.

The drums themselves sound pretty good. Kick and toms sound excellent. Snare sounds fine, but my personal taste is a little bigger "rock" snare sound. That's just me though. This snare is perfectly fine if that's how you like it. The cymbals are kinda bright though. They make the track hard to listen to at higher levels.

Cool song though. Good job with everything.

Yes, the cymbals are making the mix too bright. I'm going to go through and isolate the frequency and do a bit of cutting so it isn't as rough on the ears.

I have 2 snares to choose from the Gretsch 14X5 and the Pork Pie 12X5, the Pork Pie sounds tighter to me probably due to size. I'm still working on positioning and am not 100% yet. I actually adjusted the reso head on the kick so the port hole is up top and the D112 can get right up on the beaters, so I'm going to retrack it soon.

Guitars are going to get retracked soon too with the guitarists B-52 tri mode recto... Should sound pretty good. Also, our bass player will do her thing. I played bass on this and she is much better than me being that she is an actual school bass player.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm in the right direction. I know some people have said I should try acoustic treatment in the basement but I think it sounds fine as is... Also, I don't want to spend a little money for a temp fix when it needs a true finishing and whatnot... And I just moved in so I'm broke.

Yeah the cymbal splish a little but the kits sounds very good. I like the snare sound - viva variety I say. Do you find your breathing gets picked up by the mic set up?
Is that a rim shot in the quiet passage or a stick click? It's a bit either way in sound and confused me - perhaps that's something that could be worked on.

I don't think my breathing gets picked up, I never really listened for it.

It's a sidestick. Maybe I can figure out a better way to do it so the mic picks it up better.

CADm179! I use that to record pretty much everything I do. Heavy song, drums sound good to me, not that I'm, a drum expert. Song reminds me of a cross between RHCP and Pearl Jam.

I don't like the kick. Down with D112s! They make kicks sound like someone dribbling a basketball. It's otherwise pretty badass.

Wow, that's an incredible sound, IMO. The only criticism I have has been pointed out anyway, about the cymbals making it a bit high endy but you know that anyway so I'll just shut up and enjoy the rawk!

Actually I used the D112 not to mic the kick but to mic my buddy bouncing a basketball in sync with my kick drum. :)

A few things. . .

1) AWESOME drum set, and sound. Perfect for the song.

2) Sounds a little too compressed I think. Especialy in the bass guitar. It may just be me. I'd give up a little volume to make it sound less cluttered.

3) I like the guitar tone.

4) Singer's got a perfect voice for what you're going for.

Sounds very good. I'd believe you if you told me you ripped this off from a pro.

For the most part, it sounds friggin awesome but when I listen at lower levels, it sounds as if the bass drum and/or low toms are distorting/clipping like an analog clipping or something more so than a digital clip. It could be the guitars being pushed too hard giving me that perception also but it sure sounds like the bass drum at least is clipping out big time. No biggie if that's the sound you're going for but if it's not- you might want to double-check into that.

I think this is a great recording. The drums sit well in the mix. I agree with the cymbal comments. I actually quite like the kick and snare sounds. Perhaps it could "crack" a little more but, it's subjective. I like it. The sidestick, for me, is way distracting and seems to jump out too much. At first, I was like, "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?"

What mics did you use on the kit aside from the D112?

The guitars are heavy as all get out. They're wide, too. Care to comment on how they were recorded?

I use SM57s on the Toms and snare. Beta 52A outside the kick, AT4041s for overheads.

The guitar is just a Line 6 toneport tripple recto patch, recorded 4 times, 2 times using one mic setting and 2 times using a different one. And panned to taste.

The bass is somewhat compressed. I think one thing is the extreme highs, once that is cleared up everything will come together a bit better. Maybe clean up the mid section a bit more too.

I've been getting alot of good comments on my voice, I must be nailing it now a days. Thanks.

Crackin' tune man!

I dig the change 2/3rd through, then back to the heavy sound.

Vocals are excellent, has an Ozzy vibe to it except you sing on pitch.
