Hafler TA1600

I've been reading suggestions and opinions about power amps to go with my Event 20/20 passives (thanks Tkingen), and the Hafler ta1600 seems to always come up. For the price ($149 shipped from AMS) is there anything else that might do a better job? or are the Hafler's the best value? Anyone using this speaker/amp combo?
 
I'm glad to hear someone else is using a passive system.

I had the same combo - 20/20's and a TA1600 -at first. Used that amp for many years and thought it was a good value.

But then I scored a great deal on a Hafler P1500 so I decided to A/B them. The difference was very noticeable and worth taking the chance. If you can afford the extra coin, I'd step up a notch. The clarity in the midrange improved as did the noise floor. Better ears would probably be able to point out a few other differences.

Also check out a used Bryston on ebay. Most of their stuff used goes for stupid money on the second hand market, but there is a model that's in the ballpark for guys like you and me and would mate up with these speaker's spec's pretty well. A Bryston amp would probably be your last amp. Great sound and great build quality.

BTW don't forget to stop primary and secondary reflections in your monitoring environment. That was the other thing that helped me greatly.

Hafler has discontinued its manufacture of power amps. I use the TA1600. I think it's a good amp.
 
I also have the Hafler TA-1600 and am happy with it. When I was looking for a power amp it was recommended on this forum.

I'm still using the TA1600. For $149, it's a great deal.

I didn't believe you at first, but their web site confirms it. what happened?

I have a Hafler ta1600 and felt happy with it while powering those 20/20's that are on their way to you now. Apologies for not offering you a package deal but we still have use for it around here.
How do you feel about a home stereo receiver? If you can find a decent clean one at a garage sale for cheap that may be a solution. My in-laws have some MacIntosh tube stuff that they bought in the 60's that sounds superb in their home stereo system. Something like that might work!

The powered monitor market kicked their ass and they never fought it well nor recovered with their own monitor line.

I don't know the details about Hafler quitting production on their power amps. However, I do know that the whole market seems to be demanding powered speakers rather than passive systems. I am probably the only guy who writes about pro audio who has been pushing passive systems for the home project studio market.
 
yeah Guitar Center doesn't have much passives in the stores anymore.
some KRK 6" thats it here.
thats a sign of a dying line.

it's Mfg. for the masses. they can't keep a large assembly line going for the few...numbers, not quality driven.

but damn..BX8's for $299 is pretty amazing for a HR.
130watts, 8" to 50hz, active cross, room acoustic switches...
no wonder its sells like crazy.

imo, quality is like...once you hear it you can't go back.

or someone here said , you'll know when its time to upgrade...thats true.

like my Behginner Ultra Pro Compressor...I was ready to upgrade in about 5 minutes! hehehee :p
 
Thanks for the responses, I can't seem to find a single bad comment on these things. I ordered one for $149 from american music supply, it gets here on Thursday (1 day before tkingen's 20/20's :D).

Second the Bryston recommendation. The "budget" model is the 2B (there's also a 2B SST with different specs). It is 60W per side and will run you ~$375 used. I think they are ~$1,300 new nowadays.

This is a bitchen amp. You'll be much happier if you spend the extra coin... it makes a difference.
