I came across the following paragraph while researching info on desk and monitor placement:

'Remember too that cables are directional. Sometimes this is because the connections differ at each end (some designs leave "ground" unconnected at one end to minimize noise transfer). Even if the connections are the same at both ends, all cables will become directional once they've been used long enough to break-in. Some manufacturers put arrows on the cable or on the connectors to help with proper orientation. When I start using a cable without arrows, I orient it so any writing on the jacket follows the direction of signal flow.'

For more enlightening info:

I'm not sure I want to read anything else from that guy. Sounds like one of those audiophiles with $500 power cords.

Further down in the article he talks about mounting your CD player on roller bearings to dampen vibration and improve the sound.

sounds like a wealth of invaluable wrong information :) Post to internet's best recording resources? :laughings::laughings:
However, apparently this dude has some credits.

No kidding. Barry believes in every ridiculous tweak imaginable. And if you explain why he's wrong where he posts at Steve Hoffman's forum, they delete your posts or, in some cases, delete the whole thread.

This is good to know Ethan.
I was kind of hoping that he didn't show up here to try and redeem his errors but he may not show. But if he did it would make for some interesting conversation that might get moved to the cave! :laughings:

Ethan!

Must be synchronicity.

I'm getting ready to redo my control room and am reading through a GearSlutz thread that you contributed quite a bit to. You're a boon to us DIY types.

Ethan is like the wind! I think he already left the building.

One thing all rooms are very good at is storing bass energy...

Yeah, I have stored bass energy in many a room, in my day. The best rooms for this can store bass energy for years- the only risk is forgetting that you stored a lot of bass energy in a particular room. If you open the door without taking proper precautions, you can be knocked on your ass by the bass energy escaping through the now-opened door...

Hey, WAIT A MINUTE! He says you can REMOVED the stored bass energy with bass traps- but A ROOM THAT STORES BASS ENERGY IS, BY DEFINITION, A BASS TRAP!

Or folks would marvel at recordings of small ensembles where the guitar was "on the left" and the piano was "on the right". While this was entertaining, it wasn't stereo.

Umm, yes, it is...

I couldn't resist. Noticed the "contact" tab. Sent him an email saying:

Saw your website. You are an idiot.:laughings:

It's called audio voodoo. :D

Hey...it's OK for you to have/use some audio voodoo in your own studio process if it really helps you get where you want to go...but some of his wacky ideas are preached as audio fact, and I'm not sure how can really believe in that stuff?

Directional cables....mmmmmm...yeah, OK.

I try to position all my microphones North to South so the electron flow from the mics aligns with the Earth's poles. It adds a kind of electromagnetic “aura” to the sound.

Very sound advice Miro :D I'm going to write this stuff down! Can I quote you on this? :laughings:

Send it to Barry Diament...he may want to add it right after the paragraph about one-directional audio cables. :)
