Guts of AT3035

Hi!

I peeled the Audio Technica AT3035 to see what it ate.
Here's the result.

There's no components (except the roll-off and pad switches) under the PCB.
No text on the transformer.

Surface Mount Devices, Modders nightmare.

No, not everybody. And not even 1% of them who have some audio gear. Still, I'm not 100% sure because there hasn't been any official surveys. This is just my personal estimation.
Don't be embarassed even if you had a picture that everybody here tamper with audio gear. On the other hand, that could be veeery interesting world indeed.

It could be really hard.
It's a twisted and humorous sentence with a dialect of northern Ostrobothnia.

To make it more clear, it's properly spelled like:

Eikö jumissa ole sama eläin kuin nalkissa

It doesn't make any sense in finnish either, but it has a twist.

At least you got something right...somehow.
"eläin ",doesn't mean life, the word is translated as "an animal", "elämä" means life.
"something something"....no sense.
"laughter"...where did you get that?!

Whatsoever, starting point is the fact that "eläin" means "an animal".
A word called as "jumissa" means excactly (in finnish) the same as "nalkissa".
And "kissa" means "a cat"... and so on...

The raw translation for that sentence is:
"getting nowhere" is the same animal as "stucked", isn´t it?"
(i'm not a lunatic, i'm just living my life)

Anyway, APL, how (and why??) you do have the skills for estonian language?!

So how do you like the 3035?
And do you like it better dressed, or naked?

Well...
I do like the mic. Also when it's dressed. Naked mics are easy to hurt, as ladies are..



It's nice on vocals, doing the highs surprisingly softly (it's still a cheapo)
And low frequencies with gentle touch.
On guitar cabs it's superb - with high SPL... a killer with cabs.
Only thing is that i find it a bit tight with acoustic guit, something is "too honest" Not the acceptance with brightness, but just "a bit tight".

Room micing, perfecto for a cardioid.

For my singing tone it's doing a superb job. (my tone = very dull "normal" tone (as we all tend to have)) (just have to give quite a lot compression to bring out "the frequencies")

Overall, good enough.

And for that price...i know i didn't get a flat beer.

While we're on the 30 series, here's the much-maligned 3060.

The capsule has a front plate that the 3035 doesn't, but under that the mylar looks the same. As one might expect, the tranny is much larger, taking up all the room from the capsule to the teensy tube.

All the components are on the flip side of the PCB, and the retaining screws were torqued down pretty tight, so I didn't remove. However, I did note that in addition to the usual SMD caps & resistors, there is some sort of film cap right next to the leads to the XLR.

Thanks for the translation. My parents were both born in Tallin and came here after the war. They met in Chicago at the Eesti Maja. We spoke mostly Estonian at home until my dad divorced and married an American. I've been trying to brush up.

Killer, definitely maybe, but it doesn't "hurt in this case". For the price, it is a good mic indeed, overall. I was hoping to make it a bit softer, but i think i'm not going to bother with the SMD. I'm quite happy with it - including the characteristics of it.

I will do the picture of the "dark side" of the capsule tomorrow.

Sorry to bother, but, Marik, could you give some advices (or comments) for my t.bone project again, thanks. I'm a bit unsure with my electronics sklills.
