Guitar sounds harsh and tinny recorded

I have a Focusrite. I get this harsh, tinny sound when recording guitar, weather it's through guitar sims or micing up a amp. I've tried different mic placing with different mics, different interfaces, recording with a low gain signal, different guitars. I'm using pro logic, I've got all the right buffer and latency settings right. I'm not after a precise guitar tone just something that sounds decent. Could this be something wrong with my mac not processing the signal right?
 
Which Focusrite and which version?

What is the recording level and specific guitar / gear?

Upload a completely dry, unprocessed short WAV or AIF file you’ve uploaded to Dropbox or similar so we can hear it. maybe one of the mic’d guitar and one going direct. Record in Audacity and export 24-bit.

if you can’t post a link (not sure if rules are the same with updated board), edit off the https:// part of the URL and put a space around the ‘.’ so it gets past the filter.
 
Hi Barrsy.......when you record a vocal or some other source is the result still harsh....or is it only the guitar? What mics are you using? How do you monitor the track? What monitors and or headphones are you using?

Why don't they just make it sound like the radio. Radio stations seem to be in narrowed parameters. Just keep it between those lines.

I assume when you use an amp, you are getting the sound you want out of it? How are you placing the mic? When you plug headphones into the interface and use direct monitoring, does it sound the same as when you put your ear down by the amp?
 
Hi guys thanks for all the replies. Here is a file of what it sounds like when I record with a SM57 mic in front of my VOX ac30 straight into my focusrite interface, very low gain recording . hit this link shit guitar sound
 
Are you recording the guitar sims right into the interface? That's what I do. Out of theLine 6, then the pedals, then into the pre, then the computer. No miked up amps, ever. Try that--if it sounds good then, you'll know its the amp/mic thing.
 
do you mean the input 6 on the back of the Focusrite then back into the front input of the focusrite?

only the guitar. using Yamaha HS7 and K240 headphones

do you mean the input 6 on the back of the Focusrite then back into the front input of the focusrite?
 
Two distorted guitars - What am I not hearing. Both perfectly usable with some eq and treatment. neither appear harsh or tinny.

Same here Rob.Ok I AM deaf but it sounded like a lot of guitar I have heard many times.
My son said something a bit moot the other day? He has been palying rock and jazz guitar for (poor) living for 30 years and said, "Dad, these guys that witter on about getting a great solo guitar sound? Don't they understand that it will always sound a bit naff without a bass and drums with it?"

Just my 2pen'oth.

Really? There's no real tone or warmth to it. And I also eq and compress the bejesus out of them but I'm not happy with the results. Would recording to a 4 track then bounce then to the DAW give me better results?
