Dan's stuff is excellent. It doesn't have all that much to do with professional work, but just because he tends to recommend techniques which, while successful, are very time consuming (i.e., not profitable). Once you develop the right set of skills, you can do the same work much better much faster with simpler tools. If you are an amateur, Dan's is the way to go. If you want an idea of how professionals do it, check out Frank Ford's Website, Frets.com. Dan's instructions tend to rely more on jigs and special tools, as well as more time; where as Frank's tend more towards developing a high level of skill and speed. They both end up at the same basic place (they are, in fact, good friends who have a great deal of respect for one another - it was in fact Dan who convinced Frank to start teaching as much as he does these days), Frank just does it faster. Mind you, Dan can do it the same way as Frank, (he's a very skilled repair person), but that's not what he teaches. But they both have 40+ years of experience at this point, which makes an awful big difference.

thanks Light :) that makes me feel pretty good about his books :) definitely going to pick one or two of them up :)

This is, by the by, one of those things you definitely do NOT want to learn from the internet. Too much disinformation out there. Remember, free information is all to often worth exactly what you paid for it.

that's what i figured. i have found too much misinformation out there on other things to trust my baby to it.

I've read a lot (a LOT) on www.frets.com. That guy seems like he really knows what he's talking about. Still, if I were serious about it, I'd go pick up one of the books recommended by Light or Muttley, and then some junker guitars (those are easy enough to find...Ibanez/Fender/Yamaha have really cheap guitars) and practice. I think unless you can learn from a Luthier or something, trial & error is your best bet.

Hmm, This forum is on the internet and it's free.....:D

Maybe I have to disagree with Light about some free info.

Happy Holidays to all !!

the problem with info on the net, is that you have to know enough about the subject to be able to figure out for yourself if they know what they are talking about. i know very little. in this case i have several people, two experts included who have told me that the author of the books i'm looking at knows what he is talking about. i dont' have to make that judgment by myself. so i'll be getting the books when i can :)

thanks everyone for replying. and Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays, (whichever you prefer,) to all :)

Light makes a very good point. The difference here is that you have some history with the place. You can trust the info Light and myself give you. We wont see you wrong. ;)

Frank Fords sight that we have already listed is a good one and Dans books are good. Anything else just ask us and we'll help if we can.

true :) i know enough to know that your, and Light's advice is always dependable. :)

For what it's worth, if you do any ebay stuff, the Dan Erlewine book I linked earlier on Amazon, can be found a bit cheaper on ebay by a few sellers, although with added shipping it might be up to Amazons price.

How long before you'll be looking for a book on tube amp repair and maintenance? :):)

thanks :) not sure when i'll get it, but i'll look at ebay too.

lol, i don't mess with electronics :) i have a valve state marshall that needs a bit of love and i'm going to send it to someone i know to fix it. i feel less worried about my amps. (most of the stupid people who tried trial and error on them electrocuted themselves so i can trust the survivors  )

Merry Christmas :)
