I asked this on another board also. I use Garageband and a MAudio Ultra interface. Any suggestions on a preamp to use to get a better sound using the GB amps. I have seen some use a thing called BOX of Rock with good success and the clean amps in GB.
Thanks.

If you invest some money in a real amp and a mic you would have more control (or at least what I feel) over the sound. You should test different amps and pedal. Maybe read what other bands are using?

I would recommend the T-Rex Spindoctor which has a very decent amp simulation. You might want to wait for the next version to arrive, but in the meantime the Spindoctors have a significant price reduction (which I found out weeks after picking up mine ).

a LOT of the classic ac/dc sound, is pure volume.

thru a 4x12 cab, with the speakers complaining.

get a good marshall-based amp design, and crank it up, put a mic on it, done.

Not sure if this is the kind of thing you're looking for, but as far as guitar pedals go, I think that the SansAmp 'British' pedal does a pretty good job with the AC/DC sound, and various Marshall sounds in general. Considering how much "classic rock" is Marshall-based, I think it would go a long way towards what you want. That being said, not all classic rock is Marshall-based, so you'll still have the Vox and Fender sounds to replicate. I think that the SansAmp 'Liverpool' and 'Blonde' pedals also do a good job in those areas, but admittedly then you're going to be spending a lot getting all of those pedals. I actually get pretty decent approximations from my Behri V-amp2, but then my needs are currently fairly small, as I'm just hacking around.

I don't know if other pedals do better, but just the other day I actually put on a loop of the opening riff of Dirty Deeds and tweaked my HT-Dual pedal until I got the tone to match just about perfectly. I been trying to find a good guitar tone and that song came on the radio the other day and I was like - that's it! :p

While you just can't beat a mic'ed amp, I think notCardio is on to something.
I had some great luck a while back getting a good, full tone for slide guitar while recording direct. This is what the signal path looked like on that recording...
Tele > SansAmp Classic > Alesis 3630 Compressor > Peavey Q215 EQ > Xenyx 502 > Delta44 > Reaper > Amplitube 2 (for cabinet simulation only)

Here's the link to that thread & mp3...
