This isn't the most exciting thread, but just wanted to say that we FINALLY have a guitar center in Greenville, SC......it's about time. Went to the grand opening last night, the line to get in wrapped around the shopping center and down the street.....and geez, when I got in there were about 30 kids with black makeup on playing with as much distortion as possible as loud as possible....and about 5 people playing the drums as loud and as fast as possible. It had to be one of the worst sounds I've ever heard.....anyways, not that you guys really care, I'm just pretty excited that I actually have a store to go try a good selection of guitars at and don't have to drive to Atlanta (although I probably will end up doing so for the other stores I like)......so to all of you who live in semi-big cities w/ no halway decent guitar stores, maybe you'll be next

Of course, if you wannt to try out a guitar or amp, you're going to be dealing with those annoying kids. Some GCs have a room that you can sometimes get dibs on and crank up a little.

But in general, they're good for getting something if you can walk right in and know what you're getting.

the only time to really get any "quiet" time without those annoying kids is during the day, during the school year. and even then, you're gonna deal with the ones who are skipping.

GC's great if you know what you want and you just have to go in and buy......but for trying anything out and judging tones or anything even remotely sonic.....forgetaboutit.

cheers,
wade

When I used to work a regular job, I'd go to GC on lunchbreak sometimes. During the schoolyear at noon there are no kids to be found. Its a nice place around that time of year/day.

Look again. GC normally only has 6 different guitars, just 30 of each.

nah, you need to check the tradeins. there's usually some good bargains to be had on used gear there (and guitars in particular).

i'd have a hard time buying a new guitar off the rack these days, anyway. especially one that's hung on the rack at banjomart with all of the kids beating on it.

cheers,

The ones around here get rid of the trad-ins and buy up vintage stuff that is WAY too expensive. They want $2600 for a 1972 Marshall Major! It's a freaking PA head! They want $4900 for a 1974 50w jmp Marshall with the tolex falling off.

I actually saw one of the cheapo Esteban guitars at my local GC! I laughed my ass off!

Did your new GC come complete with sales clerks that don't know a patch cable from an XLR turnaround? :D

Also Excited

I can finally buy strings on Sunday now. Thank you GC

Buy them by the box (10 sets)...they're cheaper, and you won't have to deal with GC on a Sunday :D

Now THAT is a reason to be happy
Coming from a big city, it's been hard getting use to the grocery store being the only thing open on Sunday :D

We just got a Guitar Center here in Birmingham a few months ago. Right now it's pretty cool. I'm just afraid it will end up like Mars Music did. You know, all their employees thought they were rock stars and gave you attitude from the moment you walked into the door.

So where is it located? I'm about 40 miles north of you and might want to cruise down and check them out.

you know.. guitar center employees have actually been pretty good guys from my experience. i don't expect them to know anything because i put myself in their shoes-- they like something related to playing music so they applied at guitar center and now they're covering some dudes lunch break and have no clue why the oktava mics say they retail for $600. but really, most of them sort of know their stuff. and i've never seen an employee there getting in trouble with his manager in front of customers like at every other fucking store in the world.

my advice for major purchases at GC... is try to buy at the end of the month, ALWAYS print up internet deals for them to beat... and ALWAYS ask for the manager to make the discount offer. Amazingly, i got a korg triton at BELOW wholesale(cant figure that one out!) using these methods.

Dont really have an oppinion about CG, but it sure is fun to go in and play with their toys!

hey sonixx....you're from clemson? I go to clemson.....but yeah, it's on Laurens Road...Take I-85 to the Laurens Road exit, if you are coming south take a right (or take the exit ramp that goes to the right) and it's a few minutes on the right.

Thanks for the dirrections, maybe I'll see you guys there. Oh yeah, I'm the old burned out hippy looking guy (like that would really help.)

GC dislikes
If you eliminate the starter packs,$250 Epiphones and bottom of the line Squires, you cut probably half if not more of GCs guitar inventory.
1000 guitars and not one in tune!
Kids who don't know how to play any type of instrument banging away at guitars and keyboards.
No surprises,I know what's going to be there before I get there.

GC likes
Prices, when a big store moves in town,it pretty much becomes the benchmark for all the stores in town price wise.Im paying less for strings than I did twenty years ago,and now the price doesn't change evey time I get a different sales person.

Selection,the most obvious answer.

GC's effect on other stores.Yeah they drive some stores out of business, but quite frankly some of those mom and pop stores flat out sucked and were just there to rip you off.
We've had a Mars in Milwaukee, and now a GC and to my mind it has had a positive effect on other stores, forcing them to specialise in service, vintage gear and offbeat stuff. There are actually three small stores within close distance to my house that always have something different to offer that makes it worth stopping by.
