Hi,

I'm thinking of building a few guitar amp combinations.
The idea would be to build 3 different pre-amps out of 3 known amps:
Marshall JCM900, Peavey 5150, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier
in three 19inch rackunits and then connect it with 2 poweramps:
2*6L6 and 2*EL34. (50watts and 50 watts)

Are there any things I'm overseeing?
Would I benefit from making other choices as amps?

Also what cab choice (I'm thinking about 2 different sort of cabs) could I benefit from?
I currently own four G12T-75 Celestion speakers. Should I put them in one big case or should I split them up?
Which other speakers would make it a more versitile combination?

The style I want to record is : from punkrock to metalcore/metal
So basically from greenday till metallica ;)

Any suggestions/tips?

Wow

Sounds like a big project!

I dont know a ton, but in my opinion it seems like a tad bit of over kill. very expensive and probably not 100% worth it in the end. getting a tone to be an exact replica of every artist you know shouldn't be a priority, but a guideline for building your own.

on the other hand, if youre talking recording it could all be very worth it. the amps you listed arent really extremely different. you might wanna think of a more unique combo with more variety like: mesa/marshall for punk/metal, maybe a fender, a vox, something unique that youre not going to be able to do with anything else. if you did that, 3 different amps could very well be worth it. but imho, three amps such as the ones you listed are not really different enough to put that much money and effort into having all three. you'd probably just end up using one or two combonations when all is said and done.

but hey, what do i know? :)

Oh ya, and when you nail billie joe's insomniac tone, make sure to come back and tell me how you did it ok? ;)

I don't know it but I'll find it !!!

The artists were more like a reference , I'm not trying to copy them.
I want a versitale and unique sound ;)

The Vox and Fender is a good tip indeed but I'm just not so sure if it's what I'm looking for. I have no or little ambitions of recording blues/rocky stuff.
And IF I would record it , I would surely rent an amp or ask the guy to bring one.

Thx for your tip btw...

Any other suggestions?

Just a question, are those tube preamps you are going to build going to have plenty of ventilation in the rack? Seems like heat could be a problem....

have you looked at the schemo's of those amps??? im not sure that just pulling them outta the chasis and mounting them somewhere else is gonna work... especially when your wanting to run them to different output stages... your probably looking at coupling problems.... not trying to talk you out of it ... just saying it aint all that easy and ya better do your homework if ya dont want to blow shit up or kill yourself...

Well actually I got to give the credit to my dad.
He is going to do all the building work and he finished a mesa boogie for me which sounded nice ;)

The dual rectifier should be good enough actual dual rectifiers have so many options and so many features that its so versatile yet still sounds great. If you had enough money to get a dual then i'd say just go buy one, I know I would. Besides it seems super difficult to put in the features a dual has: not having to bias, switchable effects loop, 3 channels (each with EQ), switchable rectifiers (diode vs. tube). For your kind of sound I would highly recommend just getting a dual rectifier, think about who used them also, from sublime to botch to metallica, tool.

But in reality thats just personally my desire for a dual. It sounds like an interesting project yet one that can be very very troublesome.

Also, why try to replicate the JCM900 sound? Go for the JCM800, simpler and better sounding.

jcm900 is a real wonky piece of crap and i did not like it any time i've used it

now a 50 watt jcm800 cranked??? *whistles*

that's a smoker

ok so we rep dad for that... but ... there's a big difference between repairing or copying a schemo from front to back and reengineering these stages to exist by themselves and interchange and couple to other devices...
