Guitar Amp Programs

I've been fooling around with my roommates Garage Band program that Apple just released and really liked the Guitar Amp Simulators. Is there any such program on PC that has different simulates different amps and that you can record with?

Yes there is..... Line 6 has one.................................................. You might have to buy the line6 guitar port things..

If you don't want buy additional hardware, then ReValver from Alien Connections comes to mind. It acts as DirectX (and DXi) plugin and also stand alone application. Plug the guitar to Line input of your soundcard, open it, rock on...

If you have VST application (like Cubase or Sonar with VST wraper), then IK Amplitube is the best that I've tried. It sounds alot better than ReValver IMHO...

That's more of what I'm looking for is a direct plug in and play thing. Can you record what your playing with that program as well? For some reason I thought guitar tracks pro would let you do stuff like that, will it not?

Hi,

Someone pointed me onto the SimulAnalog Guitar Suite which is FREEWARE, developed in a University as a research program modelling electronic devices and sound good too.

These are VST's but run happily under Sonar using the VST-DXi adaptor.

To my ears these are much better than ReValver, but I have not tried the proggie that James refers to.

Yes, qwerty is right It was good free one. Good news, I just found Amplitube 1.2 support DirectX, it means we can install it and run in any DirectX application without VST wrapper.

Guitar Tracks Pro includes ReValver SE, which is lite edition of ReValver full version. Sonar also has it. One of the differencial is, it will not show as stand alone application. But since we can enable input monitoring, you can plug your guitar, insert effect, and you can hear as you play/record on track.

Yeah - I sort of fell out of my chair when I heard it - (comparing to ReValver) - no interface of which to speak but the internals actually sound good!

You guys, don't have any RF Interference, or noise, and lot of hiss, when using this programs and conecting directly your guitar to your PC ?

I'm totally agree with the sound quality and great distortions, but the noise and RF interference make this recording totally unusable.

how you guys deal with that ?

Hi,

I presume this line noise is something that you are getting already, even without using these plug-ins? They only operate on the recorded sound so.........

Why is your guitar noisy?

What sound card do you have? I am using an Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96 which has a variable pre-amp built into the card allowing me to trim the input from line level, -14dB -> +6dB, up to mic level - 6dB -> +55dB.

Optimising my input line level got rid of a lot of noise - maybe you can do a similar thing with your sound card's mixer application.

I now record guitar into a compressor/peak limiter using a normal, unbalanced 1/4" guitar cable. I then take a balanced XLR connection out of the compressor/limiter and into my soundcard. Using the noise gate on the compressor also means I can now record pretty cleanly.

That's how I dealt with the issue.

Hey QWERTY, great plugin SimulAnalog Guitar Suite...but once i edit the settings...THEY NEVER COME BACK!!! and in the FX window nothing appears...

......oh yeah have you updated to 3.1.1 and what character set are you using - it might be some localisation issue with registry locations? Maybe try emailing the author if nothing else works....

I would say "Only use software if you have to". A hardware simulation is much better, IMHO.


Try a POD or a V-Amp and you'll "see".

I have to agree with Moskus.

I fiddled around for most of last year with software proggies, then bit the bullet and got a POD XT.......

Better.

Then I got a dual channel line converter which also functions as a tube pre-amp to give me complete re-amping capability as per the POD XT Pro..... (Cost less than the POD XT Pro for more functionality)....

Much Better.

Then I got an outboard compressor to try and give myself some more beef and even out the difference between finger-picked and strummed parts......

A Lot Better.

And that's how I have been recording until -

Last weekend, I plugged in the old Laney head with the Celestion stack and stuck a dynamic mic in front of it.

Damn the neighbours! It still sounds the best!

I am thinking of just recording all dry tracks, then hiring out a studio for three hours and re-amping all the guitar tracks in a nice sounding room with somebody else's mics and experience.
