Yeah, that's huge! For practice (also another thing to try just because it works well) if you're recording a large group of people (like a small choir or a cappella group) put them in a circle around ONE MIC (be sure to use an omni pattern.) This will force you to listen to the ballance as it hits the mic and force you to work on placement and performance.
