I got bored and decided to get one of the GT44 Tube mics. I had to order it from GC. They don't stock them and each store only got a small number of them. The price was $199 and at that price, given what they sell for everywhere else, I got it just to have around. It is a medium-diaghram (.75") tube mic with a nice build quality. In the box is the mic with a pretty nice carry case, power cable, mic cable, power supply and even a shock mount (which is nicely built).
I tried the mic with acoustic guitar and voice (solo), acoustic guitar alone and voice alone. This mic is a very focused mic with a sound that sits right in front. To test this, I threw an acoustic guitar into an existing mix. The guitar sits right there in front (with some pre-amps) and has a definite space that is all it's own.
The surprising thing about this mic is how it changes with different pre-amps. I used a Joe Meek VC1, a DMP3, a RNP, an Avalon M5, a Focusrite VMP Pro and a GR. Each pre-amp makes it a different sounding mic (which is a great thing for me). I can get a really open sound (Avalon, GR, FR) and a really focused sound (RNP, DMP3).
So, I really like this mic as it is many tools all-in-one. It is definitly worth the $200.
The only note I would add is that if you are really limited in low $$ pre-amps then it will be really easy to mis-judge this mic. I am not trying to get gear-snobby at all. It will be somewhat dissapointing if you are limited to, say, a Behringer or Mackie pre-amp.
One last thing, I used the mic on a Fostex D2424LV 24 track digital recorder and an MCI JH 24 24 track 2" analog recorder. The analog recording was really very, very similar in sound. This is good news as the mic really sounds full-bodied (trying to keep the "warm" word at bay) and records great sraight into the digital domain.
A great mic for sure. GC will stop this sale soon, I'm sure!
