I've been reading this BBS for a year now and I finally have something worthy of a post. There is a book you guys have to get. It's called "Behind the Glass : Top Record Producers Tell How They Craft the Hits" written by Howard Massey. Here's a link to it on Amazon.com.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/A...5/sr=2-1/ref=aps_sr_b_1_1/002-0309104-5118459

I'm pretty new to home recording and this book has helped me tons. It's written in an interview form so it's much easier to read than some technical, instructional book. Having never been in a pro studio before I found it very useful to know how the top producers record drums, vocals, acoustic guitars, etc....

Some of the user reviews on Amazon summarize the book much better than I can so head over there and check it out.

I got it as a Christmas gift and almost finished it in one sitting. A great read with a lot of information for us new people, but there are some tips and tricks for the older. Definatley a five star rating.

"Behind the Glass" is a good one...

Also get the Tape Op compilation that's available now...great book...

i can vouch for the tape op book - superb reading. i'm just going to check out 'behind the glass' now at amazon.co.uk

thanks for the tip.

Bruce Valeria mentioned the Massey book some time ago. He also recommended another good one to me, even better than "Behind the Glass":

"The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" by Bobby Owsinski

The Art of Mixing by David Gibson also rocks.....

Hey Gidge...

Did you ever see Gibson's video set for The Art of Mixing? Good info, but real "fromage" in terms of video production.

:)

Bruce

qui coupe' le fromage?.......

never had the opportunity to check out the video yet, but I think the book and video should be required reading for anyone trying to record/mix at home.....we always hear about "pushing it back in the mix" and "bring it more up front" and "fatten it up" and "mix is too dense" or "open and "airy"....being able to see and visual this can help one know what direction to take a mix.....

I can't believe to find copies of this book in my local bookstore (recording books are extremely rear here).

Got a copy straight away, and after reading a few pages... all I can say is GREAT stuff!!! :)

Thanks for mentioning that one Gidge. I had remembered someone mention a book ages ago in an old post but I couldn't remember the correct name. cheers mate.

I read both Behind The Glass and the Mixing Eng. Hand Book, and I really learned alot.I also made a reduced copy of the frequency chart in relation to the different instruments, and lamenated it.It is setting by my mixer for a quick reference.

Thanks to Bruce and Gidge for recomending these books months ago.
Monty,

I snatched the Gibson book up for $2.50 from Crown when they had their Bankruptcy sale. What a steal. What a read.
