<<Have any of you listened to the new Allman Bros with Warren and Derek Trucks? I must say, I think it's their best stuff in years...>>

that would be b/c most of the songs on the new album are either written or co-written by warren. this makes for the second time that warren's breathed life back into the allmans, the first time with woody back in the early and mid 90's.

caught them at nissan pavillion (near DC) a month or so ago and it was easily the best show i've seen the allmans play. 95% of that was solely due to the interplay between warren and derek. insane. catch a show if you can. kinda sucks to not see dickey songs, but i'll trade superior guitarists for a handful of tunes that i can see dickey's band (who aren't half bad in their own right) play.

btw, that phil and friends show with warren and derek that i mentioned above was in the fall of 98. these guys have had more than a couple years to get to know each other, and it's definitely paying off for the allmans this summer.

<<...I always thought Garcia sounded a bit sloppy to my ears...of course I wasn't roasted on acid all the time either...>>

he always sounded sloppy to me, too, but there's no denying the genius in there. and the "pizza tapes" more than back that up. of course, the dead's inability to separate "work" from "party" is one of the things that most turned me off to them. they could've been SUCH a better band if they hadn't been on _whatever_ pretty much all the time. i'm all about having a good time, but when it impairs the ability to play coherently or remember the words even with the help of a teleprompter, it's getting in the way of what you're bringing to the fans, and that's a shame.

I didn't want to....

offend anyone by saying he's sloppy because far be it from me to judge anyone elses playing but i just bought "view from the vault III" on dvd and i noticed he was missing a few steps and sliding into notes a lil slow but this was filmed in 90 or so just before brent mydland passed ,but, acid or not they had and still do a very devout following who i think really cared about the total package which is the whole experience missed notes or not .....
having said that i do dig anything with warren haynes ,and , i also have the new allman cd i like it alot i really dig the slide work of haynes ...sorry to say but i don't know a whole lot about the trucks guy just that he's kin to butch and married to susan tedeschi ...he kinda turned me off through articles where he says he wants to explore indian music the whole indian deal just doesn't appeal to me thats just personal opinions though any indian peeps don't get offended ....peace out

?????? Why would that turn you off? What has that got to do with anything? The guy is a great player. Would he have turned you off if he said he like curry, and wanted to explore Indian cuisine and you preferred hot dogs?

I don't get it.

i knew i would catch flack ....

i wasn't turned off of him ,but ,it didn't pique my curiousity into his new album at all, i don't dig the sitar and that too me is what indian music is i'm admittedly short sided there, but, like i said it's my personal opinion, nothing wrong with it, a few Beatles songs and the Stones "paint it black" is about all i can take ....not wanting to start anything, but, i was looking for this guy to be the next great blues guy, which he may become ,but, it sounded to me like his album was gonna be different from what i wanted ....there's alot of great unheard music out there and i have certain criteria that i cut and accept by and i'm sure you all have the same similar ways to look for new music ....peace out

Oh. I see where you are coming from, but characterizing Indian music by the examples you cited is like characterizing "North American Music" by the hip hop influences someone in Madrid can hear emerging in flamenco.

That's a pretty narrow band of exposure for you to be basing your opinion of Indian music. Did it ever occur to you that there is a wide variety of Indian music?

Sorry, I know you don't mean to disrespect anyone, and certainly you are entitled to believe whatever, but jeez, open your mind and ears to possibilities and the off chance that maybe you would feel different if you gave it and unprejudiced chance.

ow I don't mean toi be inflammatory by using the word "prejudiced," I just want to point out that to judge that which you have no experience with fits that definition.

peace back

Don't mean to be a prick, but that is "short SIGHTED" not short sided.

Just a little FYI

PS: I like how this tread started about scales and all. We should start another thread and talk music scales and solos and less reviewing!

How is your soloing going? Did you try the stuff I posted?

yeah ,i know ...

i saw that i had wrote short sided, but, it wasn't till after i hit the submit button ....dude the internet has totally ruined my spelling and grammar
....and lotuscent i understand by your definition that i am predjudiced ,but, surely there is a form of music that you don't care for ,i think i am very open minded i listen to all music but how much do i need to hear before i make my decision, and yes those were bad examples of songs i gave but in my mind the sitar is a big part of indian music and i just don't get a rise out of it ...i'm sorry but like i said there's too many things that really excite me and i don't really have enough time for those genres...thanks for the understanding

it's cool, I realize that one must draw lines to direct one's own behavior... sometimes those lines may be arbitrary, but really, awareness is the key. I'm sure by your writing that you are not an ignorant person, and those distinctions we all use are never permanent anway... they are just tools for focus, I suppose. we will all evolve beyond our present prejudices, i hope.
