<<Have any of you listened to the new Allman Bros with Warren and Derek Trucks? I must say, I think it's their best stuff in years...>>
that would be b/c most of the songs on the new album are either written or co-written by warren. this makes for the second time that warren's breathed life back into the allmans, the first time with woody back in the early and mid 90's.
caught them at nissan pavillion (near DC) a month or so ago and it was easily the best show i've seen the allmans play. 95% of that was solely due to the interplay between warren and derek. insane. catch a show if you can. kinda sucks to not see dickey songs, but i'll trade superior guitarists for a handful of tunes that i can see dickey's band (who aren't half bad in their own right) play.
btw, that phil and friends show with warren and derek that i mentioned above was in the fall of 98. these guys have had more than a couple years to get to know each other, and it's definitely paying off for the allmans this summer.
<<...I always thought Garcia sounded a bit sloppy to my ears...of course I wasn't roasted on acid all the time either...>>
he always sounded sloppy to me, too, but there's no denying the genius in there. and the "pizza tapes" more than back that up. of course, the dead's inability to separate "work" from "party" is one of the things that most turned me off to them. they could've been SUCH a better band if they hadn't been on _whatever_ pretty much all the time. i'm all about having a good time, but when it impairs the ability to play coherently or remember the words even with the help of a teleprompter, it's getting in the way of what you're bringing to the fans, and that's a shame.
