I could get probably get you to listen to it another ten times if I told you that I heard a bum note in the recording.

Is the hiss a style choice? I read that it was because of the plug-ins but does it bother you?
I thought that it was weird that it kind of came and went. If it stayed the entire song, I'd appreciate it more as a "tape effect".
 
Listen to the more recent version. I put a gate on the vocal and it got rid of the hiss, I think.
 
There is a word for when you get lyrics wrong, but I've forgotten what it is. I have gone for years with my own personal meaning of some songs until finding out I had it wrong. "Wretched" and "rich" are opposite... but it made sense to me :o

As for filling the space, it's a bit hard to pinpoint without fiddling with the mix. It could also be a frequency thing that the tambourine fills out nicely and again it will take a bit of experimentation to figure out. I would save a separate project to try a few things. An ambient reverb send with the guitars getting a bit more might be all it needs. Or you could try picking out the cowbell and applying a bit of fake stereo (pan L/R and delay and detune one side) and EQ in some of its sharper frequencies. Or perhaps a little bit of a combination of things. Sorry to be so vague.

On the other hand, if you don't feel the balance is any different with the tambourine then ignore.
 
MDA Detune (it comes in a pack - search for MDA VST), which is very simple (and free) is very effective for fake stereo. You could put it on a send FX channel with your favourite EQ plug.

EDIT: Fake stereo can cause phasing problems. Every now and again switch the master bus to mono to check the mix (but mainly mix for stereo).

I listened to the first version.

I enjoyed the song. It has a touch of the Harry Nillson silliness about it.

I felt the second half had a better flow than the first.

I found that hiss distracting.

Otherwise, I think it is a great track

Too damn right. I've figured that out about my stuff - I often start sort of tentatively and then find the groove when things start moving. I'm not sure how to outsmart myself. I think I'll try some rehearsed starts before I hit record.

BTW, how'd you come by knowledge of 'mondegreen'? Are you a teacher or a writer?

Good. I like free. One thing I like about the Soundtoys plug is the tweakability - you can dial in how much detuning's going on, for instance. I'll try the MDA stuff and see. Thanks for the alert.
