Ive been thinking about some MXL V63M, MSH-1's, Ausix Fusion F-15's, MXL 990s(i already have one, so id just buy another)....ive heard the v63m's are alright..i dont need perfection, just something that makes pretty decent demoes...i'd like to be around 150 bucks. ANy other suggestions would be good..or input on these mics.

go with the msh omni's, they sound very natural as overheads, but if your room isnt the greatest, i would look into something else.

I've been very impressed with a pair of Oktava MK-012 mics for overheads. While $150 may be a little tough, you can probably come in under $200 if you buy used and aren't in a big hurry.

I've seen them on ebay all the time over the last year with a Buy It Now for less than $100. (2 matched mics shock mounts and stereo mic bar)

Yo i listened to them at that studio auditions site...i wasnt a big fan...kinda dull on the high end, and the fusions were a bit too bright, i listened to MXL 604's, and i actually liked the sound..so i think i might go the extra 50 bucks and buy 2 of those.

I've used the JM 27s before and thought they had a harsh upper midrange quality to them.

Not a surprise. That's pretty typical of Chinese condensers. That's why I stopped using my Nady CM-90 mics as overheads and switched to the Oktavas.

Moving to the Oktavas also made a huge difference in the perception of the stereo image---as in it nearly sounded mono with the Chinese condensers, and with the Oktavas, I get a breathtaking stereo spread with the exact same placement.

My suspicion is that the solid bars in the metal grille are diffusing the sound too badly. I notice that the JM27 has a similarly heavy grille, which will probably seriously hurt the quality of the sound when used as a stereo pair.

Oktavamod Mc-012s.Get the ones modded by Michael Joly if you can afford it.They are great for other things too like acoustic guitars.

Could be and I think it may also have something to do with the output transformer it uses. I like some of the JM boxes, but so far haven't been impressed with their microphone line.

Probably some combination of the above, but I know my Nady mics don't have a transformer and still have those problems.

I have had the JM 27's for a year or so now and have found them to be rather useful. Notice that I didn't say great but useful. I think this year might be the year to step up to something better but for now they work.
