Good compressor for voiceovers?

I am looking for a good compressor for voice only: spoken word, narration, commercial reads.. something that is flexible (not fixed), and maybe features a de-esser.

The eq I currently have are an Apex 460 mic, Behringer UB502 (for pre-amp) into an M-Audio 24/96 sound card.

I'm toying with the idea of the DBX 286A or the Behringer MDX 2600, but any other suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

Folks around here seem to like the RNC (Really nice compressor) from FMR Audio. They run about $175 new and are supposedly very transparent. No separate de-esser, though.

Can't seem to get the Really Nice Compressor where I live... but I was at a store tonight, and they had the Behringer VX2000. Now, I've gone through the archives, and it seems there was a lot of discussion about thhe VX2000 back in 2002. The consensus seems to be that it was a pretty good knock-off of the Focusrite Voicemaster.

Does anyone have any current opinions on the VX2000? Would it be good for the voice-overs I do? The only concern I have (and is it a valid one?) is that it's a fixed compression rate of 2:1.

2:1 ain't much but might be OK for voice work or most voice work. Do they have a return policy?

You can pick up an RNC over the internets if that fits your budget.

You don't want that. Fixed 2:1 is bullshit. You can easily get an FMR RNC on the internet. That'll be a much better compressor for what you're doing.
