Give me the key - or maybe just where to start looking for it....

CLA  Gawd! I see there's a whole section on this forum dedicated to Him and that He likes to eat sushi.

This thread has been a funny trip. Thanks for the contributions.

I don't have a problem with old age or getting older, I just don't know if I'll be lucky enough to make it there. I cycle in London traffic every day!

I pulled a sickie today so that I could d*ck around with music & recording - I'm beginning to think maybe this is the key.

Oh *that* CLA! Hell, rumor has it he's as big as the Beatles! Now see, Frits, you're starting to show signs of trust, however misplaced they may be. We now have a country of origin. When people start on this board, we often recommend gear to them, which you quaintly call kit. Our recommendations are based on what's cheap in the USA, but if you are in Singapore, Adelaide, or London, for that matter, the answers may be a little different due to tariffs and the like. Also, you need to learn international recording speak. Our "tube" is your "valve". Our "cable" is your "lead". I say mixer, you say desk. Also, as a little trust develops, you will find people on this board who are close to you. Grimtraveller (?sp) is a London resident, and my interactions with him have led me to believe that he is a wordsmith, like me. I don't know exactly how it works , but words tell me who I can trust and who I can't. Grim strikes me as a person that you should strike up an acquaintance with, if possible. We are all taught to live in fear of the big bad predator on the internet, but the more we know about you, the more we can help you. By and large, the people on this board are opinionated. On our bad days, we can be stubborn jerks. But most of us are only a danger to ourselves.

And so I ask- are you really a girl? I'll tell you why I ask. When I registered for guitar9's home studio directory, I noticed that of the 6000+ studios there, I could count those run by a female on the fingers of my 2 hands. There is plenty of evidence that women can be great musicians, composers, luthiers, conductors, and producers, but something about recording scares them off, and I am sure that we are in some way to blame. I'll try to help anybody, but I tend to make an extra special effort to help anybody with two X chromosomes, because I can think of no activity or business that is more in need of a woman's touch than recording. It's not personal, I say that to all the girls.

Ah yeh...

I've appreciated and relished all the advice I've been given and found the company on here quite enjoyable.

As for this field being dominated by males, what's new and who cares? To be honest, I simply don't care much for sexual differentiation and mostly ignore what other people think/do/say. I find so many social norms limiting and pointless.

I'm not sure if it was intended this way but I really don't need a lesson on internet/forum caution, advice on making friends, nor asked if I really am a girl (I can't deny that anyway, listen to my mp3s!). But thanks for your concern, advice and interest. :)

No, it wasn't intended that way. I'm just trying to help. If I implied that you are naive, I apologize. That's just it. We don't know who you are yet.

No worries, I'm sorry, no offence taken this side at all. You'll get to know me - I don't intend to go anywhere. ;)

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving life. It's more a case of " what I could do all night now takes me all night to do". I wouldn't trade what I've learned for anything.

Nah me either, learn something new every day and it only seems to sink in better as I get older. When I was 10, I couldn't wait to get to the age I am now so that I could choose when to go to bed and what I wanted for dinner. I've come a long way. :D

Studied Sound Engineering in College then advanced sound engineering, then Protools, then practiced

I am still kind of a beginner myself but I would suggest to first learn to find a good tone for all your instruments, learn how to E.Q. properly and to start getting the hang of using a compressor.
Also understanding that reverb isn't always that necessary (a lot of the time it doesn't need to be used) and knowing that 'the gear doesn't makes the musician/audio engineer and that 'loud' isn't always 'good'. ;)

Good advice all round, there are so many things I didn't know about that are eating up all my time now. And this is just learning the basics. Thanks a lot!
