give a listen, i could use your advice

id like someone to give a listen to recent recordings i did of harper ( i play guitar, piano). id like some real criticisim on it. i havent been able to finish it because of schedules so its driving me nuts.

im me if im online (preferred) and i can send you some songs. my aim is continback. feel free to leave me a message and ill get back to you.

were also on myspace.com/harper but only two songs are recorded for the new album. ( blue and gold, and band of brothers)

im thinking of having someone else master it for me. ill check out prices and make sure the studios around here know what theyre doing.

I heard the material. The mixes aren't bad. Just minor things.


Vocals could use a little tigthen up and lowering, the guitars could use some more character (resonance, tone shaping, body, etc), some consistency between mixes.


The only real advice I could give you, dispite the circumtances, is to compare the mixes to the mixes of like music.
 
What kind of advice are you looking for, specifically? And what are your goals? If your goal is a quick, dirty demo that will get your songs conveyed, then you did a fine job. I can hear everything and get an idea for what your band and songs sound like. If your goal is a professional release or something ... then obviously, you have a ways to go. It's not that kind of recording, and a professional mastering job might help a little, but it would probably be a waste of $$ in the end.

i actually called about getting everything mastered professionally yesterday. $500-600. i could do it if i didnt want to finish my classes. so its kind of out of the question.

it'll be used as a demo, and as a local release so i think it should do its job. just trying to do the best i can.

i started off trying to get into studios. i tried a few "less professional" studios at first and every single one blew me off. finally i decided id do it myself instead of spending all that money.

im buying a new soundcard
this time with 24 bit recording, so hopefully that will give me some more room.
i think im a little past the point where i could give the guitars the correct boost. ill need some more experimentation.

i had problems with the bass..
at sometimes its just boosted so loud, and others its barely there.
not sure how to fix it.

Hi Noa,
Not a bad effort, not ready for mastering though. Bands like this have an essence that doesn't translate well when being over-produced, so I think your minimalistic approach is good. I'd probably want to spend some more time on the vocals, getting them to do a few more takes, trying some different approaches to micing, and then use what works best.

thank you for the advice.
it took me a long time to realize i wasnt going to acheive professional recordings like what evryone hears on the radio. i took me too long to realize how much work was needed to be put into this whole recording thing. i really like the down to earth not-so-perfect recordings but there is always so much to improve. im scared to start a recording based major, because i am scared of midi, and overusing synthesizers and reverb. i hear it all to much on local studios.
