Gimme a hand setting my strat up..please?

Personally, I do both. I tweak my Strat from time to time, and once in a while I take it in to a pro. I can get it really close, and I can keep it in the groove pretty well, but long term drift is insidious, like your brakes going bad. It happens so gradually that you don't notice it. Every so often I take it in for a setup; sometimes it makes a difference, sometimes it doesn't, but when it does, it's always for the better.

Travis--

To answer your question in short, no, I've never bothered measuring after i get it back from him b/c it'd be a waste of my time. He and I have a great system down--I get the guitar most of the way there and bring it to him to finish off.

As I said (and you've corroborated), it's one thing to get the measurements and replicate/duplicate them......but it's another thing entirely to get that feel just right. and depending on weather, humidity, etc., just b/c the measurements i took from last time worked, there's no guarantee they'll work this time around.

as i said, i don't do (and haven't done) 15 of these things a day, every day, for years on end, so i don't have that "touch". anyone who does (and is worth a damn) is bound to get good at it......and i'm happy to take my guitar to him for "finishing off".

FWIW, he looked at my 83 strat that i just picked up (i love the way it plays) and he said "i'm not touching it--it's perfect". i had to agree.

cheers,

The only problem I see with not using feeler guages is that fret heights vary. Same wire could be completely different heights depending on who installed them, who dressed them, fret wear, etc.

Except your forgetting something. I don't care about the frets on other guitars, I care about the frets on THIS guitar which I'm working on, and if they are dressed properly, they are all the same height (and if they aren't, then the guitar needs a fret dress). The way we do it we are measuring against the ONLY thing that matters; the frets on the guitar we are working on.

I Say...if You Got An American Strat Then Adjust The Bridge As Much As Possible....maybe Float It Again...from My Exp I Get Rid Of Some Of The Buzz(when Playing The High Frets) Take A Look Down The Neck...your Eyes Dont Lie...you'll Know If It Needs Adjustment. If You Dont Want To Adjust The Truss Rod Then Dont, But Make Sure You Take It To Somebody You Trust...thats A Good Guitar You Got And Whoever Is Adjusting The Rod Will Know How Much You Love It. Then If You Stll Get Some Buzz From The First Fret Make Sure Your Nut Isn't Dug Out
