So...

I took the day off today, much needed for my head to clear, and what do I do?

...I threw together a new version of Giant Steps...

...someday, I will learn to rest... :(

If anyone has heard my other version, it was a VERY straight ahead, clean tone, etc...no melody, just soloing...

THIS version is, well, different...(except for the backing tracks, which are the same.....it's still me on bass, some simple guitar comping, and a quick drum program...)...and its only 1:30...

Anyway...

I've been working on phrasing behind the beat more, and on this, I wanted to try that out, with both the melody and the solo...and rather than just burn the changes, I wanted to try some space, and bends...

Peace,

sounds really good.

really nice phrasing and the playing was executed really smoothly which impresses me.

the bass playing is great as well.

ya, this is nice....

Scott...you're the only one who's posted here that I know of, who would have the "cajones" to post a version of this song. I listened to your POD examples too....nice also.

I'm not gonna give you 5 stars for the mix on this...but the soloing and bass is very nice. I certainly never have publically allowed anyone to ever hear me [attempt to] play this song!!...except a looooong time ago when I REALLY hacked it!!:( ;)

good to see you around here again. You'll be one to raise the bar on the performing around here, without a doubt.

Well the playing i sout of my leauge comment wise...

The mix is weird however. Everything sounds so thin and far. The ride is eating the mix here.

First of all, thanks a TON for listening!!

Yeah, this mix is the first of a few I've done of this track, and, though it was never meant to be about the mix or production, THAT part bugged me from the minute I heard it, after the fact...too much slap delay, guitar too distant, and the backing tracks are just "there" for function...

Keep in mind that this solo was the last of 3 takes, in the middle of a busy day, and mixed in a hurry, before leaving to pick up my baby girl from the babysitter's...so I just literally threw it together on a last minute whim, and ran out the door...

Here's a bit better mix: still not perfect, I'm sure, but I'm not releasing this, so I don't really care, it's more about the phrasing ideas anyway...

Thanks again!

YO!

(+) "Samokin"...........Great job w/ the changes to this classic!. Mix sucks but so what!!!!I rarely comment on mixes as I'm a newbie in that area but I am a 'playa' and can say....really innovative interpretation and nice playing.....destination notes following killer licks slammed me. [like the C# @ :35, among others]

Some soloists don't realize that no matter how good a lick or line is , if it doesn't LAND on a crucial note, it remains just a "cool" lick but breaks the melodic and communicative flow.

(-) Lines were slightly disjunct and a little on the short side. I'd have prefered a few more 5-7 bar phrases with sequential hooks weaving into new modes presented by the changes. Then again you threw this together on some downtime!

We def gotta do this or another Real book tune together....PM me! We could burn melt some shit on a 'Miles' or 'Bird' head.

MAN!

schweeeeeet!

Great playing, and tone. Never heard a fusion take on GS before. Way way cool.

Thanks, man. Really brightened my day.

Ever hear Rahsaan's version? The one with the vocals? Hilton Ruiz played the piano solo Flanagan SHOULD have played on the original.

I'm pretty sure I knowe how Tyner got that gig.

Saw Flanagan live, he worked a "Love Supreme" quote into one extended solo - got a big "YEAH" from a few of us...
