EDIT: Going to re up this with Jeffs contribution at a later time

sorry, I know my tracks are a highlight for most of the recording world :D

i liked the arrangement ^^ it reminds me of old 70s fusion jazz stuff like lonnie liston smith and such but with a more modern sound. the drums are programmed? the intro seems live but then it feels like a drumcomputer
the mix seems clear but the eletric piano is slightly distorted in an unpleasant way imo.
i don't know tho, i tend to think the best way to get good mixes is to record it the way you want it to be

yeah the drums are programmed...a mix of Abbey Road 70s, using an mpd24 and some altered generic fills with added percussion...i may try to humanise them a bit more if they sound so obviously programmed (they're a bit tight for "jazz" to begin with)

the keyboards meant to be distorted...oops...maybe too much huh? :D

thanks for listening doc...Im not sure what Im aiming for, this is not my style of music at all :drunk:

The Rhodsie distorted sound is retro kewel...I just think the part could use a little HF 'tine' to sparkle it up.

I have an issue with the bass playing nat6 on the minor interpolations...sounds not as good as it could be. The minor/major turnarounds remind me of "Palladium" from "Heavy Weather" [Weather Report]. The dorian sound of the nat6 doesn't work as well as the b6 aolian...the conversion sounds more natural, to me with b6....and it points to the conversion. Are you playing a b6 in the piano in the minors?? Mebbe that's what's bothering me.

[later...]

Aha! When you play the minor progression, the third chord Ab-....the bass is playing the A natural, in passing, through it...it becomes non diatonic....and sounds that way. It doesn't mean it's wrong...just a sound that you might be looking for? Personally, I'd prefer Ab.

I'd really like to make a bass and guitar track for this....you can dismember and or re-assemble it...or trash it. I love the groove in the drums. And I actually get to play through some changes...go outside n' stuff.

The Jaco and Holdsworth in me want to speak...in whatever measure I might have it.

ps... wouldnt hurt to build supporting purcussion thicker!! What's there sounds good...just not regular enough and, thus, jammin' the groove enough.

lol. Jeff when i see you reply I think "oh no" and wince :D

your knowledge way exceeds any clue i have, especially with this kind of stuff...the bass is not my instrument, I generally play small loops in Abletons scene view and then use them as building blocks in any tunes backbone...my theory knowledge amounts to just about zero...even after five years piano lessons

you know it might be something I try to learn after this...

If you want just the drum, percussion, vocal and keyboard files I can give you them mixed or unmixed??

or just host them up here?

I thought the drums were a little "rock" sounding but, for me, they are some of the best cymbal samples

thanks for listening bud...and making me think :drunk:

ill add to the percussion, I actually cut some of it back as it sounded too busy :)

An mp3, w/o bass and guit, of the current mix ...uploaded on a server like yousendit...or thrown up here...would be fine.

What resolution do you use on your platform?? I'll dupe it, and send WAV.

I like the drums...kind of a mix of "Tribute the Jack Johnson" and some Brazilian flavor.

I like it a lot.

Thx!! I'm between projects...shedding parts; some stuff on your record would be a nice vacation. :)

Hey my first collab :D

I may have inadvertently turned the keyboards up a jot when EQ'ing them...lemme know if their level's a problem..

I think you should be able to right click this and save, if you cant i can send it to you if needed...its recorded at 24/48 and hosted at 320kpbs (if that makes any difference)

thanks for the kind words and I hope you can make something out of this :)

Holey carp, KC! Who's the gal singin'!!!???? She gives me goosebumps! You should way feature her more!!! Ooooffff!

Just loaded, and listening, and imagining. This one's inspiring. The groove in the bones track you sent is just great! And I really like the way you added tags to the measures...room for stuff. This is gonna be a treat! Hope to do it some justice.

I just cut samples out with abletons sampler and cleaned them up...I have a few more from the same singer but didnt know whether to go more instrumental..I sang on the vocoder in the back of them...Im far better than her! lol :)

Brill that you like it...I know you'll do it way more justice than I could, Ive heard enough of your stuff...hurry up coz Ive got a soul one next ;)

only joking...take your time mate

it aint been done yet dood, this is an imaginary thread, if there had been a tune this is how it would pan out :)

Bass track almost done....what's the metronome setting...wanna do a cut&paste.

kewl :)

its 4/4 120bpm.....dont mind how you do the file(s), never done this before anyway

haha jazzmeister jeff in the house :)

I kinda had my bass part in my head when whoomph in you come! great stuff Jeff, should be a blinder by the end of it :D

What's a blinder??? Hairy palms?? Don't play fast enough...arf

I'll make changes...or you can cut/paste it to death. Your call...

"playing a blinder" means an outstanding performance

you just send it as you hear it and Ill mix it in :)

Before I continue, here's a sample of what I'm hearin'. Rough mix...gettin' jiggy...maybe too much.

I don't wanna make you feel kinda bad canning all this stuff. So if'n ya want something diff of way more laid back...clean.... This is some experimentation...quick search for what I hear. I'm kinda whack.

Yeah, I tore through that book. So much great info.

I hate to be a snob, but the sheer number of spelling and grammatical errors in that book is mind-boggling, though. I mean, how much can it be to hire a copy editor?
