ive been reading "Mixing Audio" by Roey Izhaki in the hope i can improve my mixes before i go on recording stuff..good book by the way, id recommend it to anyone regardless of skill level

i liked the arrangement ^^ it reminds me of old 70s fusion jazz stuff like lonnie liston smith and such but with a more modern sound. the drums are programmed? the intro seems live but then it feels like a drumcomputer
the mix seems clear but the eletric piano is slightly distorted in an unpleasant way imo.
i don't know tho, i tend to think the best way to get good mixes is to record it the way you want it to be

yeah the drums are programmed...a mix of Abbey Road 70s, using an mpd24 and some altered generic fills with added percussion...i may try to humanise them a bit more if they sound so obviously programmed (they're a bit tight for "jazz" to begin with)

the keyboards meant to be distorted...oops...maybe too much huh?

The Rhodsie distorted sound is retro kewel...I just think the part could use a little HF 'tine' to sparkle it up.

I have an issue with the bass playing nat6 on the minor interpolations...sounds not as good as it could be. The minor/major turnarounds remind me of "Palladium" from "Heavy Weather" [Weather Report]. The dorian sound of the nat6 doesn't work as well as the b6 aolian...the conversion sounds more natural, to me with b6....and it points to the conversion. Are you playing a b6 in the piano in the minors?? Mebbe that's what's bothering me.

Aha! When you play the minor progression, the third chord Ab-....the bass is playing the A natural, in passing, through it...it becomes non diatonic....and sounds that way. It doesn't mean it's wrong...just a sound that you might be looking for? Personally, I'd prefer Ab.

I'd really like to make a bass and guitar track for this....you can dismember and or re-assemble it...or trash it. I love the groove in the drums. And I actually get to play through some changes...go outside n' stuff.

The Jaco and Holdsworth in me want to speak...in whatever measure I might have it.

ps... wouldnt hurt to build supporting purcussion thicker!! What's there sounds good...just not regular enough and, thus, jammin' the groove enough.

lol. Jeff when i see you reply I think "oh no" and wince

your knowledge way exceeds any clue i have, especially with this kind of stuff...the bass is not my instrument, I generally play small loops in Abletons scene view and then use them as building blocks in any tunes backbone...my theory knowledge amounts to just about zero...even after five years piano lessons

you know it might be something I try to learn after this...

If you want just the drum, percussion, vocal and keyboard files I can give you them mixed or unmixed??

or just host them up here?

I thought the drums were a little "rock" sounding but, for me, they are some of the best cymbal samples

I like the drums...kind of a mix of "Tribute the Jack Johnson" and some Brazilian flavor.

I just cut samples out with abletons sampler and cleaned them up...I have a few more from the same singer but didnt know whether to go more instrumental..I sang on the vocoder in the back of them...Im far better than her! lol

Yeah, I tore through that book. So much great info.

I hate to be a snob, but the sheer number of spelling and grammatical errors in that book is mind-boggling, though. I mean, how much can it be to hire a copy editor?
