Generated power?

Recording Modus Operandi
I just got informed that the live event we're doing at a bazaar will be using power from an electrical generator supplied by a carnival ride vendor. We're just using a small pa system with an extra amp for monitors and two guitar amps. This is all suppose to run off of one 100' power cord with a single surge protector. Anyone have experience with this?

Will this do the trick or will there be problems with power fluctuations? Should we be looking for a different power source?

Thanks in advance.

They used generators at Jamfest this year to power the PA, guitar and bass amps, lights, everything....semed to work fine. I don't know the specifics, but Jay, JPW23, should be able to tell you all about it, as he set it up. Ask him about it.

Yeah, should be fine. The last year I did a couple of gigs at the Speedway and they just used a small homestyle generator to power it. I was a bit sceptical but we had no problems at all.

it might well be no problem at all... but are ya sure ya wanna trust some carnies??? ever hear the noise that can be generated in a bar when the fridges kick in.... now imagins a ferriswheel.... the situations mentioned by the others were more or less self contained within the system.... so dont be surprised if it's noisy... perhaps you could rent a heavy conditioner from a local store to be safe...

I just finished the second day of my 3 day event and so far it is going real well.

The last evening the organizer had us setting up about 50 feet from the power generator which was inside a truck. The power seemed a little low but adequate and blew once because they had 4 whirlpools running off the same line. Then they decided to run a separate line for us and everything was fine as far as the power went.

There was a problem with the noise from the generator. It was a low hum and seemed like it was causing phase issues. The bass response was all over the place and most of the time was like the bass strings on our acoustics were super muddy and/or not audible.

Today I moved about 100 feet away and it was like day and night, the whole audio spectrum cleared right up. Of course, today I soloed all day and maybe that's what helped clear some stuff up too :)

It still seemed a little underpowered but it worked fine enough.

Hey, thanks so much for the help people. It sure is nice to have a place where you can get an answer to about every conceivable audio problem one could develop. I guess that's why I call it home:D
