I'm almost done with my mix, maybe just a few issues to deal with. Here's a few questions/remarks for you guys...

Has anyone bothered taiming down the breaths in the vocals? Sometimes i feel like it's a distraction, sometimes it sounds fine the way it is.

Did most of you carved the hell out of the low mids (200-400hz) in the bass amp? Muddiness extravaganza!

The bass amp sound is a real challenge for me, it's booming, muddy and the highs are weak. Has anyone scraped the amp and went with only the DI? With a amp sim maybe...

anybody have any thoughts on mine? I'm new to mixing so input would be much appreciated. :guitar:

I really like the vibe of your mix! Cool odd snare drum. I'd try to go with the kick drum a bit deeper but not necessarily louder. The vocals could have a bit more presence or shine in the air band.

Cheers,
Andy

I love Liza's breath, I didn't mess with it except at the end when she attacks "I can feel it...", I just reduced the wave's volume where needed.

I didn't find the bass that horribly muddy. And I used the DI to bring up the finger thing and enhance the top end.

the bass didn't need much work .
the drums were a problem but in the end it worked nice for me.

must say her voice is awesome

Here's my take. I tried to keep the mix clean as the original recording and performance was already great. When I listen to many of the contributions, I can't help but think that many have "over worked/processed" their productions and tried more than the song requires. I also lack alot of dynamics, something that is very imporant in a sparse track like this (in my opinion)

All the best from Sweden

hi,
could anyone tell me, how to upload my mixfile to the group in soundcloud?

Many thanks

You're pretty right, sometimes it's good to go back to the basis: make it simple but efficient. The competition principle let us often forget that.

You have to join the gearfest group, then upload your track to Your account, then click "share" and share it with the group. Et voilà !

Hey everyone here is my entry, any comments are welcomed : https://soundcloud.com/mixpipo/pipo-gearfestpuremixcontest

I tried to keep the live and vintage vibes and not over mix it. From what I heard (didn't listen to the almost 800 entries), the are a lot of different types of mixes, this will be a looot of work for Fab to listen and choose!

So after a day I compared my mix with fresh ears to what the band has already released.
Oh well, that sounded so much better than what I did. So I tried to get a bit closer in this direction.

I hope you like it but criticisms are very welcome!

Cheers,
Andy

I heard they're ending submissions early. So too bad if you didn't submit already there's always next time:p

I tried to keep the mix as clean possible while working with dynamics instead of reaching for effects. Aiming for that 70s sound rather than a modern touch: Bass working in the low mids, kick lower down and guitars and vocals handle the rest. The performance was great but I felt the drums needed some more punch, especially when the chorus kicked in. Also the guitar needed "some help" to stand out and take place in the mix. Overall the song was pretty easy to mix as I did not try to change or overdo anything really, but rather enhance what was already there.

Very nice balanced mix. Good work on the old school vibe. Great job, sound of wool!

I tweaked my mix a bit here is the redux. I thought my first one was too narrow. I changed the comp on the crush bus to an 1176 from the dbx 160. The dbx was too intense. And I toned down the fx a bit. I also skipped the amped bass it sounded like crap to me:cursing:. I used sansamp, it sounded better :guitar:
I'd love to hear comments I'm pretty new at mixing and. I wan lern things.
Cheers,
Buddy
