You might check with someone who has used one, but I'm pretty sure from reading the description of that Allen and Heath that it isn't gonna send all your individual channels via usb to your computer.

Good point indeed... This isn't clear in the marketing info for like 90% of the usb mixers I've seen. Granted, I haven't been shopping for a usb mixer, but whenever someone mentions one and I look it up, I can rarely tell. A usb mixer that just outputs the stereo mix to usb is pretty worthless considering you can accomplish the same thing with ANY analog mixer and the addition of a cheap stereo interface.

Man this is confusing

I've looked up the 1010lts soundcards on eBay Australia and some of the Music retailers but even on the cheap side they're selling for $334 each, meaning IF i was able to get them cheap i'd pay over $650 for the pair [off eBay].

Would these even work with my PC? It's getting old now, a P4 2.8ghz HP Intel running Windows XP with 2gb of RAM. It's had no motherboard upgrades and is pretty stock otherwise.

And regarding the "Not sending individual channels via USB", how do i know if this will be the case or not with USB interfaces? Does the Tascam only send out a left/right signal as opposed to individual channels? And how would i control 16 individual inputs from my mixer, which is a Soundcraft Compact 10 and has 4 mono ins & 6 stereo ins?

Cheers for your advice so far :)

Damn, Australia must be jacked on prices. Those cards are $199 brand new from any dealer, Guitar Center, musiciansfriend.com etc.

The 1010lt hasn't changed in years. I got my first one in probably 2002. My second one in about 2007. I use them both simultaneously for 16 tracks at a time on my single core AMD Athlon 2400 that I built for $500 about 5 years ago. :) The only problem is, they're PCI and not PCI Express, so newer motherboards that only have PCIx may present a problem.

I think (as far as I can tell) the first usb mixers were basicly just normal mixers that had the stereo output routed through a cheap usb converter built in. More gimic that function in my opinion. Then I think they figured out that those would really be useful if actually routed each channel separately. You just have to read up on them. As far as the Tascam, I don't think I've ever seen a rack mount interface that didn't send separate channels- it was just the (earlier?) mixers that were questionable. But again, read, research.

It's really much more common to use the "mixer" for its preamps in front of an interface, then do your actual mixing inside the computer. If you wanted to mix outside the computer, you could assign each track an output, then route the each track back out to a channel on your mixer(s). IMO, you lose some of the greatest functionality of using a computer this way. I'm sure there are some people who do it though.

Australia is SCREWED for prices bud, i would buy the majority of my gear from the U.S if there wasn't such an issue with power conversion for the things i want. You can pretty much guarantee to pay double if not more for Australian merch. I picked up a Shure DMK57-52 Drum Mic kit from the States for $470 AUD, in my local music shop [Billy Hyde] it retails for $1249 AUD.

I'm guessing this is where the "Read, Research, Review" suggestion gets implemented, as i have NO idea what PCI or PCIx even means. The PC is a HP bought in 2004, a Pavillion i believe, so i'll try looking up what components it shipped with regarding the PCI/PCIx thingamajig.

Cheers for your help mate. :)

I get that impression- someone else from your neck of teh world was looking for studio monitors and the prices she was getting down there was like double too!

That 1010lt card is an internal soundcard. You'll have to take the side cover off your computer, find an open "PCI" slot and pop the card in. Your "older" computer *probably* has several PCI slots for expansion cards (like soundcards and network cards and modems, etc.) and it probably has an AGP slot for a video card (or maybe not- some have video built into the motherboard). Anyway, PCI is being replaced (or supplemented) by PCI Express (PCIx). Its a different size slot (among other things). Most new motherboards look like they still have both formats... ANYWAY...

Mackie Onyx series should be considered, too.

For around $1000 you get a decent mixer, nice (though not boutique-nice) preamps, 16 discrete channels of A/D conversion. I used a buddy's for a project that required more channels than my MOTU 896HD and I think it sounded better than the MOTU.

You have to sift through driver issues, but once we did, things worked rather well.

I can sympathise, i'll be paying $600 for a pair of KRK Rokit 5 Gen 2's today.

I'll look into the 1010lt PCI compatability with my PC, i appreciate the info mate.

Todzilla, looking into the Mackie Onyx series now, though through the info i've received and thinking a little i've come to the conclusion i don't really need a hardware mixer, i really only need the interface and inputs. I can use cubase for my dials, and with the Waves Diamond and Sonnox Oxford plugins i use i don't need FX or EQ either.

The Mackie Onyx 1640 looks really good though... [insert *drool* icon]

I just checked the completed listings on eBay and a few 1010LT's went for $150+ but one went for $71. I've seen them for $80 a few times.

anaesthesiac what happens in Australia if you buy one second hand from someone here (USA) for $80? Do they really add several hundreds of dollars in customs? 'cause even if they added 50% tax that's still only $120.

I have absolutely no idea about the customs surcharge, on the few items i've purchased from the U.S i haven't been slugged any duty, the 1010lt's i found were on eBay Australia, here's the main one i found: click here

I didn't look too hard as i need a solution quickly and i seem to be going around in circles, once i think i've found an answer i end up back at the beginning with no ground made up.

After visiting a mate of mine today, Christmas Day, i went online and purchased the Tascam US1641 for $638 Australian Dollars delivered/insured/warranty etc. Problem Solved! My main choice for this was it's simple, it gives me what i need and it ends my frustration, PLUS after seeing & playing the INSANELY wicked sounding VOX Night Train Head/Cab combo my mate received for Christmas from his wonderful wife i want to blow my money on something similar! :D

I may never achieve commercial success, or even perfection in my own eyes, but goddamn it i WILL have some fun stuffing around with my gear along the way....

Merry Christmas to you all :)
