I am trying to soundproof a section of my 2 car garage for practice/recording space. I am getting good information about sound construction for the walls but my big challenge is the thin wood garage door. I need to keep it operating but have to keep some of the sound from escaping. I am nervous that I will spen a ton of money on soundprrofing a room and then get busted due to the sound escaping from the garage door.
Also does anyone have any thoughts on a preferred soundproofing with 2 sheets of drywall vs. 1 layer of soundboard andf a second layer of drywall. Also if sound board is used, should it be on the inside of the wall versus the exterior panel? Thanks. cP

The biggest problem with doors of any kind is getting a good airtight seal when closed. I sealed up a metal sectional garage door by installing rubber seals around the door frame and foam between the sections. Make sure you get a tight seal when it's closed. The thin wood door is going to transfer vibrations as well. For my metal door I purchased some 1" thick dense foam from an upholstery supply house. I cut the foam into pieces that fit snug inside the sections of the door. This damped the metal from vibrating and also provided some absorbtion on the inside. The foam added considerable weight to the door but I had no problems with it sagging and the opener seemed to lift it just fine. You could still hear the band from in front of the house but my neighbors never complained.

Hope this helps.

If you need to keep the garage door operating, have you thought of using layers of moving blankets over the door??? Cheap and flexible, could be attached so as to be easily removeable from hooks.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have heard that the sectional doors are worse for sound compared to the one piece doors. I must have jinxed myself because right as I posted this question my door spring broke. I guess It may be a good time to get a more insulated door? (and apply some extra sound proofing as well)
