Hello all you lost souls....

actually, I have two songs that could use reviewing:

"Fuck The FCC" and "The Slime." they are both posted at http://www.myspace.com/thefabrications

there are also two other songs there (one a dancy and humorous techno song, the other a short comedy skit) which you might want to listen to for your own enjoyment, although they are already mixed and nothing further can be done to them besides overdubs.

Thank you very much!

anyone??

anyone?

mixing advice? fresh ears? opinions? suggestions?

I'm listening to "The Slime" as I type. Hey man, I don't know what to tell you.....This is way too cool. I didn't think you were allowed to have that much fun in a studio. Great use of panning, throwing vocals back and forth. Cool samples. Awesome effects and lyrics. I did detect what seemed to be some distortion, you might have mixed down too hot. This also makes it seem a little too muddy in bass. Aside from that, I can't tell you how much I adore this fucking tune.

Oh man..."Fuck the FCC" is a killer! I'm dying, man. Hilarious. And well done, too. Throwing those sound effects in there at the right time had to be harder than one would think. Another great one with awesome lyrics. Sounds good too.

yeah, now listening to it again, i think you're right about mixing down too hot. the original tracks are all clean... shit, time for a redo. that bass does get a little muddy too, thanks for the tip! glad you dig the stuff, it was all improvised on the spot & then remixed.

I'm on dialup, so listening to streaming music doesn't work too well for me. Do you not want people downloading your stuff? I don't blame you.

Good luck.

I got absolutely nothing except "Contacting The Fabrications" for about 5 minutes.

:(

yeah, downloading's a bitch. but oh well, once we're dead we won't care if anyone steals our shit. all the tracks are available for download at: http://www.deadbutler.com/fabrications/audio.html

Strings7, i guess i'll apologize for Myspace.com. sometimes their shit goes down for no reason. fuckers. i get what i pay for, i guess. thanks for trying.

Hi

I listened to "Fuck the FCC". Very good song, as Rami mentioned, it must be difficult to place all those sounds at the right time. Great work.

I also like "The Slime", very good stuff.

For MySpace, it always take forever to start a song. I would go with NoWhere or SoundClick, you have too much talent to be slow down by the MySpace server.

Ok I got them at the other site. Just listened to The Slime. Very well recorded and a good song! I'm not real happy with the kick and snare though. Can't quite put my finger on it but there's something there that just didn't hit me quite right. Also heard some timing issues at about 3:00 into the song. Loved all the vocal work. Must have been fun to record.

Listening to Fuck The FCC now. Funny! Very good choice of sounds in the right places. Another one that must have been fun to record. A lot of work involved but it came out great! Nice job!

if you figure out what it is about the kick & snare that doesn't sit right, let me know! for some reason this one was kind of a bear to mix, i think it's because it was recorded at my friend's house and he JUST set up his studio and doesn't really know exactly to put everything together. i usually work with beats & loops, and haven't mixed live drums for about 4 years, so i'm trying to get the hang of it again and i definitely think you're onto something... i just don't know what it is.

the snare just sounds muddy, my friend's top mic on it didn't record for some reason so i had only the bottom track to work with, and had to use some of the overheads to get more top snare into it. something about the kick sounds a bit sloppy... i'm trying to figure if it's the way it was mic'd, or something i should have done better in the mix...

After a few more listens I think it's just got too much of the room and not enough of the kick and snare itself. There's no real definition there. Maybe more of the kick and snare and bring up the OH's to sweeten instead of the other way around? Or is that what you did in the first place? They just sound really distant and indistinct to me.

cool song.
it's funny, but not like those jackoff radio show parody songs. there's actually interesting material here.

Hi

I agree with you, the music is catchy, the text is funny, overall a very nice production. I wonder if the lyrics are too explict to be played on radio or at MTV ? Matt, did you try to have that song played on radio or in night clubs ?

"Fuck the FCC" - Made me glad I clicked on your thread to begin with (I haven't had time to review much lately). I'm into that whole parody genre and have been for years. You have a good balance of 311 and NIN going on musically, and definitely a weird al y kinda lyrical feel. I'm glad you stopped censoring the words toward the end, only a loser would censor themselves. ;) Only gripe are the weak vocals, but for this genre of music they don't have to be stellar. Hell, John S Hall made a career from sounding geeky. :p

"The Slime" - creative tune, kinda Beck meets gangster rap (sorry for the comparisons, but it helps you understand what I'm hearing). Some bassline issues after 2:00 (playing's a little sloppy). In places the drums are a tad low-fi sounding for my tastes. Lyrically it's not as funny as FtFCC. This just sounds sloppier and less inspired than the other track.

thanks for the comments!

as to your question about where i was trying to get the song played; i don't make songs with that kind of thing in mind. i just make what sounds good to me, and making a song that started off like a radio version but then suddenly becomes explicit sounded funny to me.

as to the Slime, i agree with the sloppy bass playing & muddiness. i went back to the original tracks and found that the top snare mic didn't record at all, so the only way to get a bit of that snap was to use the OH mics too much. also, this song wasn't necessarily trying to be "funny," just weird i guess.

i should also mention that these are both first takes, improvised, and none of the people involved have any intention of working on them further, save for myself and the mixing. that's how the Fabrications do it, we just get together with nothing pre-written, make up some shit on the fly (hence the weakness of Doug's vocals on Fuck The FCC), and then later i just mix them out of whatever came out decent. it's kinda fun, trying to catch lightning in a bottle, but doesn't yield album quality songs, which is why it's all free to download on the website. we just do this shit for the love of it.

fucking genius.

I didnt listen to any but f the fcc. simply because I want that song in my mind.

Im out no more music for a couple hours.

thanks
