And who ever gave me the bad rep for my last post, Fuck you! you are a coward for not signing it!

Let's give this thread a little more life.............
Curious......since this thread, are you a little more hesitant about buying from someone on this site/group or other groups?........I sure am!
I guess I'll make it a point to add checking out the "good guys' list before I even consider buying anything else. Even then, I'll have to see more than one recommendation.
It is a shame that one deadbeat can cause you to look at everyone with skepticism.

i'm even suspicious of the good guys list now....but of course all this goes down after i gave a guy in texas $326 for the delta 1010 on ebay.....lets just say thank god i have half a gallon of vodka and a couple of packs of cigs

Yea lets not let this guy cause this distrust to happen.I was recently ripped off.Ijust jumped the gun on a guy cause he didnt send me a tracking number right way....you know the problem really is paypal if you recieve item they dont cover if someone sell you something dont send they dont cover what good are they.....now that you look back there where signs here.....I think it is manditory that if you sell something you send right away not wait a week stay in contact with person you sell too .....do your research theres ways of tricking guys like this.We just have to be smarter... First we need a thread at top to check info ,have link that would help to look up phone numbers, addresses, if they own that property of address there giving. In some places as you see you guys did cover some ground and it probably will get your money back
We need a chain of people in all areas to help each other "say someone lives in seller area goin to look at the stuff" that my 2 cents anyone else have ideas...i was think of a webpage with at the scammers names addresses E.T.C

Stuff like that gets into liability of the website owner and that's just not going to happen here. If you want to use something with a system set up for buying and selling use Ebay. I DO wish the "Free Ads" section was limited posting to users with 100 or more posts. That would help out greatly.

ebay mmmm ive been scammed on there too ......there are forums that have links to stuff if it just a link how would that be a liability?

That is a really good idea.

I think he is saying that having people's personal information on a list would be a liability.

oh sorry though he was talking about link to phone number lookups and stuff ......... the thing with 100 post if someone want to rip someone they post 100 post in no time to set it up that makes it even worse cause then your more trusting

I agree that someone COULD generate 100 frivolous posts quickly en route to scamming someone else on the board. It would take time, though, and act as an impediment and deterrent for potential scammers. Plus, someone with 100 hastily written posts over a short time span will look suspicious to begin with.

I like the idea. In fact we could broaden the effort to include all forums, but alter it slightly so that only people who had a certain number of posts (say 20 or so) could start a new thread. That would kill spammers. Then again, it's not that hard to just recognize spam and ignore it...

Well our friend Chris racked up ~20 posts before posting here. I searched his posts, and they were pretty innocent at first, but you can tell he was setting something up (alot of him just chiming in on a subject, like "Oh yeah, the SM57 is great on cabinents")
Bottom line, use a credit card (preferably through PayPal since then the seller doesn't get the actual CC#) and you should be ok.

EDIT: If you really got scammed it wasn't :EDIT

That's the BEST way. I agree 100%.

If you use a credit card through paypal (even if the seller charges you 3% to do it) you are pretty safe. I know that when I got ripped off for an M-Box on eBay, Paypal told me to go f$ck myself. I called citicards, and bada bing, in 30 second phone conversation, they returned my money to me. They went after paypal, and paypal got stuck with the bill...and rightfully so.

Paypal could implement a system that is much more secure, but won't because of cost and damage to their base. I think if it was more secure they'd eventually make more, because people would be less skeptical.

I am surprised that this guy actually gave out a real address and phone number. They usually aren't suicidal enough to do that. I have yet to be ripped off by someone who gives out real info like that, and I buy a ton of stuff on these forums.

This kid is probably headed for juvi or jail for some @ss pounding fun. I hope buying heroine was worth the pounding.

BTW, his mom is probably his girlfriend, and he's probably not 17, more like 25. Go get him. What's with Michigan and scammers?

I personally am no less likely to buy something online just because of this fiasco. Who knows why this kid did what he did. The bootmo line is that everytime you enter into a transaction with someone that you do not know (or even someone you do know) you run the risk of something happening. When you mail money first, the risk goes up. Even COD is risky. You have to pay for the package before you get to open it. I always talk to a person on the phone first and try and trust my gut feeling. I also don't go through middle men. However, even that leaves me open to the possibility of fraud. Even with a ton of posts (look at the current Deepwater thing). Today I may be an honest business person, but if tomorrow shit hits the fan here and you buy something from me, how do you truly know I will follow through?

The bottom line is that the risk is always out there. Credit Cards make an excellent buffer, but even they aren't 100% secure. I am aware of that risk, and I am always willing to accept the consequences if something happens. I will also always gove the seller a reasonable amount of time to ship my item, or to make it right if something happens. However, I am the one who decides what is "reasonable", and not them. When I decide that time is up than I inform them, give them a couple hours to prove to me that they are following up, and then the ball is in my court and the action phase starts. First, contact local authorities. When doing so make sure you mentioned that you mailed them money (you now have a federal offense to spur the local authorities into making an effort in your behalf). Contact the post office and the federal anti-fraud groups. In the end you still may not have any recourse, but at least you have the satisfaction of knowing that you did what you could and maybe this person won't be able to do it to someone else. But I always remember when I buy something from an individual, that I may end up either a partial or a full loser in the situation:(

Is no one around here close enough to this guy to pay him an in personal visit? I'm several hundred miles away, but I have been known to do such things for a little $. You guys sent money somewhere, hows about posting his full information right here in this thread.

Well, since I've got a couple of things going on to try and resolve this, I'm going to hold off on an details, until it's settled, one way or another.
As far as info, he used his name, Chris Klein, as a moniker here is about the only thing I can say. I'm not sure how ProTools feels about giving out info, but were both determined to settle this....there will be no giving up!

Regardless of your receiving the money or not, you need to prosecute this to the full extent of the law. If not, he will do it again, and again, and again until he learns that a person doesn't do the crime if they can't handle the time.
