Hey everyone. I'm wanting some suggestions for a frontend mixer, not a controller, for my le system. I am currently running a 003+ with a presonus lightpipe. So I have a total of 18 channels in and 16 out.

That being said what are some nice analog mixers for this setup. I basically want something to fine tune my sound beforeit hits protools. In other words do it the real way lol. Thanks in advancefor the suggestions. -Stephen

Do you have $3000. to $5000. to spend new or are you looking to purchase used?

What are you using now for mic preamps?
I noticed the stuff you posted on the different "myspaces" is pretty decent.
Your equipment list does not mention any unless they are just built into the interfaces.
I am not familiar with either the ones you list.

Wouldn't you want some great outboard preamps as the front end vs. a mixer?

In our studio we have a Yamaha PM1800 which people love to take out the channel strips to make boutique channel strips with a great pre and a great EQ strip. But I have a full console and that is a beautiful thing for it has 8 aux sends and a 8 channel matrix, full meter bridge.

You can find such consoles used on ebay for not much money but the freight is what is going to cost ya.

So if you can afford it and have the space I would go for a good console! I find it better than just going into the Digi then into Pro tools, it really warms it up and just to have that big old analog console in the middle of your set up shows that you care and mean business.

I'm willing to spend at the most 3k. Right now I'm depending on my 003 and Presonus Eureka Pres. I've been looking at Mackie's Onyx i 1640. For the fact that it has the firewire integration and can be ran with PT M-Powered. But my if i used it i would use the direst outs and run them into my 003. Thanks for the compliment on the stuff I've posted thus far, that was when i first got started, I have tons of other stuff that sounds leaps and bounds better imo.

Purely out of curiousity, what can a mixer bring to the table that you don't already have?

I want to be able to fine tweek everything, before it hits Pro Tools and have the insert capability, instead of recording an open mic and relying on my plugins. Also I like turning knobs.....just a plus. I want to be able to use this as a live mixer as well, I record church worship services and the Onyx seems to be the way to go, unless there is something better out there.

the pre's on those mackies are nothing special though as the pres are probably no more then 50 cent electronics and the friewire capability is going to cost you quite a bit especially if you are not gonna use that function. Try looking for something with more expensive pres and non digital capability; more bang for the buck!
