We have recorded a song and put it up on the web. Please visit fos.iuma.com and check it out.

I was attempting to get a more polished and wider sound than what is presented. I know that alot of this takes place in the mastering phase but do any of you have any pointers/hints?

The guitars and bass where recorded with a POD. I used a Strat with various pickup possitions (mostly bridge with SD hot rail humbucker, neck for the ebow). Vocals were recorded with an Audix OM-5. I can't stand the vocal results! I ended up cutting the mids drastically to avoid my ears bleeding while listening to the mix in other environments (car, home stereo, etc.). I know that a good condenser mic might help with this but for now all I have is the OM-5. Drums were recorded using Drag and Drop Drummer from Cakewalk. All was tracked inside Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.

Let me know what you think. Please don't spare any thoughts... I'm pretty new at this and really want to progress.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob, that's a great song.

Here are a couple of thoughts, pure opinion.

The vocals are great and on key but sounded thin to me. I used to have the same problem getting warm vocals. My final setup for recording vocals is simple and I love it. I have a shure sm-57 mic into an ART Tube MP and then directly into the soundcard. I record completely clean and then if needed I'll add compression to even it all out. Sometimes I'll add reverb for depth, but I hate reverb, but a very little little bit can do the job sometimes.

Also, I think on the chorus, it would be cool if you kept the existing guitar track and panned it to the right and then recorded another guitar track (not just duping it, play it again), and pan that one to the left. That will give you a wide sound. I did that with the guits and some of the vocals on some of my stuff http://mp3.com/smartapple

Good luck to you, it sounds great as it is, but with some polishing, man o man.

I just noticed you guys are local to my area.

Hey Teddie... thanks for the insight!

I've heard many things about the Art Tube MP preamps. Seems like along with the Rode NT 1 and POD they are the most talked about products on this BBS. I will definately have to consider it...

Man after listening to your songs I can see where you're coming from! Your vocals are strong and as thick as molasses. Nice guitar work too. Good sounding wall-o-grunge on Thunder on the Mountain.

You are in my area! Maybe we'll have to jam sometime.

Thanks again,

Rob

Hey Teddie,

I was wondering, after listening through all of your songs, what you use for drums and guitar processing? They both sound really good! The drums have an alternative, almost techno style to them; while the guitars are really full and in your face. Do you record direct? Or do you mic an amp? Really sweet sounds!

Rob

Rob, hey, thanks again for the kudoz.

I record everything direct except for vocals, which of course I use a mic (but it's pretty simple -- just the mic into the ART MP and then into the soundcard.)

I use a Pod. I think you said you use a Pod. I love the Pod. So it goes - my guit into the Pod into my soundcard.

My drums are a Roland R70 unit. It's kind of a pain in the butt to program, but I like it. It's quite old though.

You're using a Pod?

Rob, hey, yeah, I'd like that.

Let me know when you remix "Friend of Sinners". I'd like to hear what you come up with.

Agree with Teddie on the vocals...great guitar playing and sound on that tune....I'm not in love with the drums, but, hey, what can I say...nobody likes my drum sound at all and at least yours had a lot more variation than mine lol.......gibs
