The song is "Dead Horse" http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/rockpop/theron/

I've been playing with the mix for awhile now.
Any standout impressions would be great. Let me have it.
I wrote, played, edited, tracked and mixed everythings so I'm sure it is subjectivly polluted.
Feel free to rip and comment on the song, lyrics, performance itself as well.
Thanks for your time.

Dead Horse
Sounds pretty good on the crapola PC speakers.

Melody - Sounds like you're bottoming out on your vocal range there in the beginning. You might try a change of key or maybe a pitch shift (as long as you don't care that you cannot re-create it live).

When the guitars come in strong, are you clipping there? I get lots of distortion. You might want to back that down or clean it up a bit.

Liked the song and lyrics a lot. The recording/mix isn't the greatest but it does contribute to the raw feel. Sounds like a good drinkin'/bar song to me. I kept waitin' for some harmonica or a kazoo to kick in:D

thanks for listening. Anything in particular about the mix? I thinkd I needto sit the vocal better in the mix. Hopefully I don't have galreing tracking errors.
Peace,
Theron

Theron,

Man that is really cool, you have a great style there, very unique sound.

Your voice is awesome, modern day kind of cowboy music.

Maybe a whole new genre, Cowboy Rock.

That's a song I want to listen to more than once.

I think everything worked on this mix to me, effects and all.

I could see you riding a horse singing and playing an electric, draging a Marshall amp behind you

Great work! Very cool.

cowboy rock has already been invented... its called kid rock, after all he's a cowboy baby. i liked the song, the distorted electric needs to be a little more up in the mix and not so wet and muddy.

"Anything in particular about the mix?"

Well .....after another listen or two these were my thoughts:

There's an annoying buzzing string from the acoustic guitar during the beginning of the song (panned right). The vocal starts off sounding somewhat stiff but develops a feel as the song progresses. The vocal track sounds a little harsh...very strong mids...either EQ differently to compensate or lower it in the mix a little? Scriabin mentioned the distorted electric guitar....however I think it is too loud in the mix already (although I agree that it could be less wet and muddy....also, is it just me or did you hit a couple "wrong" notes there? ) I listen to the song and wonder what it would sound like with either another acoustic guitar or a harmonica doing that distorted electric's part. The smoother "lead" electric guitar sounds good but slightly "pitch challenged" and could be down in the mix a little more. Back down the kick drum some. At times the vocal track and the guitar tracks sound like they were recorded a little over the top and sound like they distort slightly. However, after having said all this, I still really like the song...concept, lyrics and arrangement. etc.

Thanks for the positive review G.T. It would be a Peavy classic 30 that I'd drag behind my horse.

Scriabin, how would I go about getting that git track less wet and muddy? Should I just play with the e.q.?
p.s. I hope the Kid Rock reference was not directed at this song, but the idea of cowboy rock.

thanks for listening.

first of all, thanks for taking the time and listening again. The lead electric and the other electric is all one take. Same git and track so, I'll need to be careful with what I do to one section as it will affect the other. I probably did hit a wrong note or two. I'm not much of a guitarist. I'll clean up the intro. And the vocal I'll tay around with the e.q. I'm not so good with that so, I will hopefully learn somethnig.

Great advice and ear
thanks, theron

Decent mix. Once you bring the dirty axes in the vocals get covered up slightly in the 1st chorus. Like the song.

Work with the song some...some drums coming in at the beginning of the 2nd chorus would kick majorly.

Song has some killer potiential.
best of luck with it:)

thanks Stickman. I am exploring a drum reinforcment on the second chorus. For now, I will take "decent mix" as a positive due to the level of my experience and ear.

theron.

Anyone wanna tell me where it's at on the other song, please do

this comment on mp3 mix is really helpful to me. My ear sucks and I've some bad tracking and mixing habits that I only realise through others ears. This sort of forum has helped a lot in just a couple comments and one song.
Gracias por todo.

I am not sure if I hate or love the vocal effects. What did you use?

hate or love vocal effect

jgourd

Well, it is very unconventional, not recomended and an old bad habit. I recorded the effect live in the signal chain with a Korg ToneWorks acoustic guitar effects box. It is one of the reverb pre-sets, slightly augmented by me, and thrown live to the track cause I have a hard time dealing with the sound of my living room when cutting vocals. Reverb helps me feel more in the mix and gets my preformance motivated.
So now that you know, do you hate or love it? What about the song? Thanks for listening

Theron.

P.S. since I've had that silly effects box, I can't recall a single time when I plugged my acoustic git into it. Mmmmm?
