Macle--My guess is the Distressor. The NTK and the API should make a pretty nice signal--clean and punchy. I bet the Distressor is the culprit. Paris is supposed to sound great, from all I've heard. I'd try to forget about the harmonic distortion thingy and just go for the clean and upfront track. You have a great rock voice. Its got plenty of character and color without adding harmonic distortion to it.

Just make sure you don't have any clipping in the signal chain, get a strong under 0db level and cut that way. If you need compression, use the distressor, but just as a vocal limiter to avoid any transient peaks. I'm sure it does that function.

Yeah, I've noticed it in all the songs I've heard.

Hey, you are in LA or thereabouts, right? If I were you, I would pay a visit to one of the companies that sells the good stuff. Tell them what you have and see if you can get some pointers on how to best use the stuff. If you have questions--get them cleared up because your music is very strong. if I was a record complany guy and I heard your stuff, I'd be wanting to get you signed.

There's a guy here in Detroit who is related to a friend of mine. His name is Brendan Benson, and he reminds me a lot of you, musically. He went out to LA, had a bunch of record offers,( he hasd a lawyer shop him--he didn;t do that part himself), got an advance, and bought the gear he wanted. He dug the old 70's sounds and asked people how to get them. He then took the advance--bought a house for 50g, bought a bunch of the gear he wanted, and cut his records at home.

So go and make the great American rock album, will ya? :D If Brendan can do it, so can you. If you want to discuss this more, PM me.

Doug H-Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!

A very big d'oh.

Well, I've had a hellish time getting a vocal sound, especially on the more Lennonish type stuff (which, come to think of it, is pretty much everything  ) . I thought I had found the mic that was good for it (the NTK), it was the first mic of the few I've tried that seemed to work, but now I'm starting to hate it, and I checked around for comments on it, and discovered a lot of similar negative feedback to what I was thinking.

You're thinking,"wait, I said it was the overuse of the Distressor, not the mic". I know, but I think I was trying to use the Distressor to warm up/fatten up the mic, which is really thin, and I was thinking the harmonic distortion was helping and, oh whatever...:)

I'll check out Brendan Benson (so he records everything himself? )

I know, we should really get a lawyer. We actually had one before, but, long story short, it didn't work out. But, maybe this time, it will (trying to be positive :) )

Thanks a lot Crawdad, I really appreciate your feedback and encouragement!!

I didnt hear the first mix, but this mix sounds fine to me. The song was put together very nice. Its a pro job IMHO. Sounds kinda like the Hollies. The ending was cool but scared me at first cause Im a little stoned-lol. Good work.
