Lt. Bob... this isn't smoke....I love Steely Dan and this is him all the way. I'm listening to the last one you have posted (Nobody Else But You) and love that analog sound. The mix sounds better than most of the ones I listened to last night, and I listened to about 15 songs! I'm serious. I'm listening to the lead guitar now...whoa...is that you? This is good stuff.

:)
Joro, clay and christiaan, thanks for the listen. I have been a little surprised that the old tunes held up to some extent. It was on some old inexpensive gear.....all SM-57 mics and a Traynor board now that I think about it. I remember spending an awful lot of time on these tunes and I didn't have any kind of noise reduction or much in the way of fx. I sure wish I had that kinda time to spend with my current gear. Where the hell does all my time go? ;)

I didn't hear the artifacts I expected from a 25-year-old tape recording. I've got one of those too and it's filled with hisssssssss.

And I have to chime in that the tunes ROCKED.

I heard Al Kooper in "Just a Midnight Dream" and that bass-line doubled with the vocals in "If I Don't Have You" just screamed Zappa from Overnite Sensation.

Great stuff. I'm glad you got to salvage it. Thanks for sharing.

That bizarro bit rate confused Windows Media Player. It played fine but the track time listed was wrong. The progress bar slid across to the end and stopped while the song kept going...... :)

What bizarro bit rate ???? I think my ripper is set to 192kps and I don't know enough to have changed it. is that a bad setting to use and if so, what would be a better rate? Thanx :)

Midnight . . .

Very cool.

Definitely worth re-doing and modernizing.

This is what I'm hearing:

1) Slow down the tempo. Think something that swings a little.

2) Play everything softer, smoothier, and jazzier.

3) Think "3 a.m. groove", and I believe you will be on to something.

I'm hearing "Santana meets Weather Report".

This is cool Bob!;)This sounds just like some of the stuff that was on the radio in the 70's.To me it sounds kinda like really early Chicago and few of the other horn oriented bands from the 70's.How much did one of those 4 track reel to reels cost back then?I remember when recording at home was just a dream that would never come true for me during those days because the gear was so high even for a 4 track.

Enjoyed the tunes!Glad the thread got bumped up or I would have missed this one.;)

Thanks for the idea chessrock....I'm definitly gonna do that in a few weeks after this new band is up and running. Since it's your idea....do you want to play anything on it? If so let me know otherwise I'll be sure to let you know once I've done it.

Kramer....as best I can remember (it's been a while and I think I partied those brain cells out of existence ;) ) that machine cost me about $750 thru a friend that got me one real cheap. I think list was around $900. But $750 was a lot of money in the early 70s. You know the thing still works fine too. I'm thinking I might use it for some backwards tracks on some of my stuff I'm writing now.

Cool. I would love to lay a bass track down on that. I don't know if I could play it like Jaco Pastorius or anything, but I could groove out with a good drum track (or even a loop if you have one you'd like to use).

Ok that'd be great! I'll PM ya' with some details. It'll probably be a few weeks before I get to it but I'll put some drums down for it and let you go to town. Gotta go to rehearsal right now but I'll send you a message later tonight. :)

Just listened to If I Don't Have You and I must give you your props ... this was great! You have a fantastic singing voice, and the horn work was excellent! For being twenty-five years old it sounds excellent!

I tried listening to If I Dont Have You, but NWR is going really slow and I'm having trouble getting it...damn computers...

I will try again later ...

Thanks for posting these old tunes!

very impressive for the time! i bet you didnt know too many ppls back then doing the same kind of thing. no internet forums! i bet whoever heard it back then had their socks blown off!

definately worthwhile and funky!!!

:)

Listened to 'If I don't have you'

Great playing, tight performance!

Gotta definite 70's vibe.

Is that you singing? Wicked!

Very impressed.

Holy shit Steve, I'm listening to Midnight... and it rocks!!! 25? 4-Track? Sick!
Very nice!

What's cool about it too, is I feel like I'm listening to a 10 inch vinyl MP3. Is that you on the sax? I didn't have much time to read other responses...very nice playing all around. I'm very very impressed.

Also, listening to Life Number Nine finally. Glad he let you post it. Excellent song...and nice horns on your part.
Ya, this is sweet shit.

I gotta post my new song up, and then I'm going to lay down a couple of tracks to give you the basic idea of the collab song. I'd love to hear your horns on it. I'll email when I'm done...

Ya this sounds nice my friend. Very smooth performances!

Lt. Bob, This is really cool stuff. It's great to know that there's people like you out on this forum. Really good.

SLuiCe......thanks for listening. I appreciate your time and I'm glad these old tunes hold up passibly well. I have another little 30 second thing from those same tapes coming tonight that should give everybody a chuckle.

Yeah SluiCe, I'm playing everything on those songs. That's why there were few mixing possibilities.....things had been pinged so much that I had limited ability to change the old mix.
