Found a Fender Standard acoustic

Perhaps you got a block or firewall that doesn't allow you to see it?

There is no such thing as a 'good item' from a pawn shop IMO.

I would always 'deal' with pawn shops. never simply pay what they're asking. They may have had it for a long time and need to take what they can get for it irregardless of what they paid for it. Besides, they never pay retail for anything. They give loans at pennies to the dollar and if they get stuck with it, have a lot of leaway to play with.
 
It turns out that it wasn't such a sweet deal. The owner got it off the guy simply on the Fender name and he got ripped, so he was unwilling to haggle over the price. He got pretty pissed when I told him what he had, too.

Oh well, I'll just keep looking for a good new one, and not necessarily Fender.

That could very well be. I'm reminded of a Fender Jazz Bass, Long Scale, teal green, that I saw in a pawn shop back in the early 90s. They had a $70.00 price tag on it, so needless to say I was beside myself. I went in a day or so later to pick it up and the guy had just replaced the tag. He had changed the price from 70 to 400. According to him, a few minutes before I walked in, a guy that worked at one of the local shops came in and saw it, and told him what he could get out of it. I was 14 or 15 at the time and I could have cried lol still pisses me off to this day.

Back on topic, I'd say that if it's in great shape, it'd be worth every penny he is asking, but I'm a fender nut, so of course I'll say that.

Au contraire; while it's true that pawn shop folks have largely become savvy about the value of musical instruments, there is still the occasional good deal out there. Austin has lots of pawnbrokers, and just about every shop has a bunch of music gear. You have to sift through a lot of crap to find the good stuff, but it's there.
 
Here's another little pawn shop story. I was interstate and I went into a pawnshop to have a look around. He was selling an ME-5 for a massive amount of money. I hadn't heard of the ME-5 but I'd wanted an effects processor for some time. I thought the price was a little steep for how old it looked so I offered him about $50 less than what he was asking. He wouldn't have a bar of it, just kept saying it was actually worth way more than what he was selling it for. I told him that I'd seen it cheaper at the other pawn shop down the road (bullshit) but he still wouldn't budge. So I left. The next day I got my friend to go in there an offer him another $50 less than what I had offered. Apparently, he was extremely quick to agree.

I was in a pawnshop looking at some mics they had, and I spied a vintage Shure 548 in the case with a $30 tag on it. The little strip with "Shure Bros" and the model number was missing, so the guy didn't know what it was . With a straight face, I asked him if he'd take $20, and he countered with $25. Sold American. I must've moved furtively when I picked it up, though, because his eyes narrowed a bit and he said ,"You know what that mic is, don't you?" I said yes, I do, and thank you very much. ;^)
 
It's ok to rip them off when you can, cos they go to such great lengths to do it to you

yamaha will definately get you great bang for your buck for a fairly inexpensive acoustic. many people feel that the mid 70's solid topped yamahas are one of the best pawn shop finds around.

i personally play an alvarez most of the time. i think it retailed for two something, but had a couple of imperfections in the back side finish, and i got it for 120. a steal if you ask me. i prefer that thing to a great many acoustics i've played. plays easily, nice tone (though it will never open up like a solid topped guitar will), really tough build (i flipped it over the other day to drum along with a couple of djembes, and really beat the hell out of it-i was a little surprised that i didn't hurt it-banged up my fingers on it though, heh), and i just put a K&K pure western mni in it so it will be much easier to set up for open mic/gigging situations (having to crane over one mic for guitar and one for vocals is a bit restricting, but now i can just plug in) and sounds quite decent.
 
Rokket, the only lefties left in the shop are new ones and only Hohners.

That is the price on it, not the price she gave. She was not there today. She will most likely go a little lower. But you may not like these guitars. The tone isn't too bad on them.

A friend of mine recently bought a music store here on the south side of Chicago and has roughly 8,000 to 10,000 guitars in his stock. He has a Yamaha FG-335 lefty hanging around in the back that looks to be in real nice shape. I have the same exact model, which was manufactured around 1977 or '78. The tone on these old Yamaha's is unbelievably great, on par with any Martin D-series of that era.

I could ask him if he's willing to sell it if you like.
