Hi, folks,

I just got an R8 in good condition from a buddy  - I was also able to find a MTC-1 companion SMPTE/MIDI sync unit cheap on E-bay-- cheap enough that I felt willing to take a risk on an untested unit. The MTC-1 did not come with a manual, and I'm having a hard time finding a source for one. Basically I haven't gotten the setup to operate like I expected, and I'm trying to determine whether the MTC-1 is broken or I just don't know what I'm doing.

Here's what I've tried:

First, I figured I'd try to stripe my tape, so I tried inputting MTC via MIDI IN, expecting to see a LTC signal at the LTC output (which I would then record to track 8), but no luck (the "midi in" LED does light up). I also played a short snippet of LTC audio signal into the LTC IN (found a short sound file online), and the "LTC in" LED lit up, but no MTC was output at the MIDI OUT port. So, it doesn't seem to be operating as a straight LTC <-> MTC converter.

Sending MTC or MMC messages to the unit has no effect on the operation of the deck (although as I mentioned, I haven't even figured out how to stripe the tape yet). I also can't determine what the purpose of the serial connection to the R8 is, other than supply power to the MTC-1 (does it offer MMC control of the deck? enable the deck to chase to MTC? etc.)

If anyone has this combo working and can help me out, I'd be much obliged. The deck works fine, and I suppose I could always pick up a jl cooper PPS-2 syncronizer or something, but it would be cool to accomplish the same thing with what I already have. Thanks a ton!

Sorry, no luck. I got a jlcooper PPS-1, also real cheap on ebay, that does the trick (w/o MMC tho). If you figure it out, please let me know!
