Footswitch for Punch In-Out recording

Hi all. I've just started in on the recording side of things. I've got a Yamaha MT50 analog 4-track, and need a footswitch to control the punch in/out recording. I'm going to make one out of an old BOSS stomp box I've got kicking around. What do I need to send to activate the recording? Is it just as simple as connecting the two sections of the coax via the switch, or do I need to be sending a specific signal? If anybody knows what is needed...

It's just a simple switch. Test it with any guitar cord and short the tip and ring together with a piece of conductive metal. (Like a key or a penny)

Rig up your footswitch to close the circuit momentarily.

Just be a bit careful using a mechanical switch, cos sometimes you can get the switch to 'bounce', meaning as you flip the switch, the swtich actually triggers multiple times. This occurs when one side of the switch has almost contacted wit hte other side, and the electricty either arcs across the switch, or the laws of physics (damn them) kick in.

This isn't a problem on most analog gear, but because in the magical world of digital electronics things can happen very quickly, the device being switched can sometimes be triggered on and off very quickly.

I'd be pretty confident that it won't affect your stuff, but if the unit does start to do weird things when you use the foot switch, it could be this.

The solution is to create yourself a really basic digital gate switch thing (cost you about $3 to make) which only allows the switch to trigger once. Off the top of my head, I can't remember how to make one, but I'm sure that I could find the info if required.

There is a use for old stomp boxes that have out lived there usefullnes ;-)
