Focal Spirit One Headphones

My buddy Mike is a distributor for Focal and he dropped off a pair of these headphones for me to try out tonight.
Compared them to my AKG 271's... The Focals are so much clearer and louder than the AKG's. I actually heard some reverb nuances that I hadn't heard before. Not hyped in bass and nicely balanced in all frequencies. I have to revisit some of my mixes after hearing these...

So they would make some solid phones for referencing guitar and other tones and stuff on?

I've been looking for some good headphones to set up vsti sounds and stuff up on that would translate well to my monitors but the whole "dont mix on cans" makes me feel like its not possible.

they probably would ..... it's Focal afterall.
others that are nice and flat for that sorta work are Audio Technica ATH AD700s (bang for the buck at 99 dollars) or Sennheiser HD 600's (replaced by the 650's so you may be able to get a deal on them)
Both are open air so they're not good for tracking ...... but they are good for critical/reference listening.

I don't personally agree that you can't mix on cans and we've been through the discussion quite a few times.
To me the main requirement is to have actuall reference type cans and also a good headphone amp. I use a Headroom amp with their crossfeed circuitry that eliminates a lot of the 'in your head' sound and makes them sound a lot more like listening to speakers.

My mixes done on cans sound VERY similar to my mixes done on monitors.
Now a buncha guys will jump in and say the truism as if it's a religion, "You CAN'T mix on cans" ....... I don't agree and have mixes to prove it if I cared about proving anything.
