I've had the MR-8 for a couple weeks now, and I've been fiddling around with it and getting comfortable. Today I just finished up my first tune and I'm psyched by how good it sounds! This little machine is awesome!

I've been playing music for over 7 years (that a real long time; I'm 20) I've been in three groups and played some shows and recorded studio demos with two of them. But recording my own tunes at home, just me, my two hands and my wobbly voice has been some of the most fun I've had playing music! I didn't know how fun and rewarding recording your own meak little tunes could be... it's a blast!

One question... after converting my song into .wav format, the song wouldn't fully save onto my computer. It kept giving me an error message, something to the effect of 'bad data', I had to erase my 7/8 mix-down... RErecord 1-6 back onto 7/8, convert it AGAIN and then it saved OK. Any clue? It was scary for a minute there...

Anyway... great to see all the helpful discussion on here, this is the perfect forum for a beginner like me. Wish I could share my first tune, it's not much, but I'm proud of it. It's got some kickin' slide geetar, esp. for a suffering bass addict like myself!! :^) I don't have a web page or anything to post my tunes on, but maybe someday!!

The wav x-fer problem has been a common bug amoung the MR-8's. It has happened to me twice mysielf. There is an upgrade to version 1.03 on:

www.fostex.com

I guess that version is supposed to fix that problem.

Welcome to the MR-8 club! Glad you are enjoying it. I share the same feelings. Writing songs for myself has been a something I have never experienced fully until I got the MR-8 and now I am hooked!

Here it is

Thanks for the responses and the advice. I followed it and got my first song onto nowhereradio.com! Here's the link:

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/?aid=2435/singles

It's late, and my roommate is asleep, so I haven't had a chance to check out how the thing sounds over the nowhereradio.com site, but it seems to have loaded without any problems.

Let me know what your thoughts are; good start or am I going in the wrong direction with playing/recording, etc? I definitely need a drum machine, that would do alot for the tune... but I'd love some feedback. Recording tips, guitar tips, learning-how-to-sing-better tips, haha. If it's too bad, let me know... I'll hide behind the 'I'm a bass player' excuse! Thanks again for the responses!

No a bad first effort. I can hear the groove that you are trying to accomplish (from one bassist to another), would love to hear it redone with a drummachine, the MR-8 also has a click track that could really help when recording without drums.

I agree with clif. I can see where you are going with it. Great effort ! I would like to hear it done with an acoustic guitar. The bass is excellent, and has kinda that "unplugged" feel about it, especially when you go into the faster tempo. I just think the bass would sound better with an acoustic. You might even consider no drum machine at that point. I also think your vocals are very good. Just my dimesworth.

Nice job, Jimmy -- kinda has a Mercury Rev sound. What did you use to record your vocals?

Nice job Jimmy. You sound like you are having a lot of fun with the MR 8.When you get something recorded that you would like mix help with post it over in the mp3 clinic. The crowd over there can be pretty tough sometimes but most are really helpful if they know you are making a serious effort.

Hey.. thanks, everyone, for the listen and comments. I'm definitely looking for a drum machine (when i scrounge up some extra cash!)

I used a VTech 1030 for the vocals, and the bass (which was coming out of my Crate 165-B... she's an antique and I love it.) I hadn't really tought of how an acoustic would sound in the tune... going to give it a shot. The bass part does provide a strong groove for the chorus, might be an interesting dynamic with an acoustic. Thanks again for the comments everyone...

Kramer, could you please change that to:

As you've linked directly to the signup, and thus the legal disclaimer isn't seen by the artist prior to them signing up...

The message is not editable waldo.I'll try the "report this post to the moderator" link and see if Dragon will correct it for me or delete it.

I just reported it and asked him to change it to http://www.nowhereradio.com/signup.shtml or either delete the message.Whichever was easiest for him.

I dont know how I posted that page.I thought I posted the very first link after clicking the "
sign up" link.

My bad.Sorry about that.

The VTech mic is an older one... actually it's my roommate's. I have a Shure vocal mic, but I used this mic because it was more dynamic picking up the bass through my amp... I'll ask him where he got that thing when he gets back to our campus...

As far as the errors on nowhereradio.com with my tune... I don't know what's up with that. I uploaded it with no problems, but now it only seems to play the lowfi band. Perhaps the wav. to mp3 converter doesn't do that great a job?? There are no options for bit-rate or any of that other stuff. I'm not sure if that's the problem... it works on my computer pretty well, but I've got a LAN connection that hauls ass, so that might be the kicker.

I'll mess around with it some more... any suggestions?

Cool toon Jimmy. Very good first effort. Nice slide chops!

Kramer is right about this and I can personally vouch for it. The dudes and ladies in the MP3 Clinic have helped me alot!
