This is my very first recording done in my home studio. Let me know what you think. I know that I need to un-pan the toms and take some of the highs off the cymbals.

There is actually vocals to this but the singer was off key and it was just painful to listen too. The band will be back to try again on Saturday.
The bass was recorded DI off a Ampeg SVT.
The guitar was recorded with a sm57 and a Samson Dynamic ( not sure what model # ).
SM57 outside of cone. Samson dead center of cone on a (4) 10" unnamed cab.

Only a couple of things stand out to me. The amp noise and the panning on the toms. Other wise not bad at all for a first attempt.

the low end on the kick drum is muddying up the mix. The snare is DYING for some reverb... the depth on the flange is too deep and its making the guitar sound out of tune during the clean part. Record another guitar take to match the existing one and pan them hard left and right... the mix will be more full... Try to EQ out the bass string click/buzz.. its kinda annoying. other than that its not too bad.

Nice job the Drums sound nice, but toms need some major help.

Guitar sounds pretty nasty. Upper mids out of control. Sounds like a cheap amp.
Clean guitar is muddled a bit like there is too much chorus on there.
Snare sounds a mile away. Pitty pat mosquito fart snare. Definately needs some balls!
Kick sounds pretty decent, but needs more low end. The tone you captured is good though.
The toms really, really suck. Tune those suckers!
Bass guitar needs more compression. It pops in and out and isn't smooth. At around the 3:25 mark it sounds like the bassist was hitting the strings against the pickups... sounds like total butt pants. FIX IT. It sounds really bad!
I think if you improved your SOURCE you'd be surprised how good your stuff would sound. I don't see any major mixing/recording snafu's that don't involve the source itself. Tune the drums, get a better guitar sound/amp and go for it.

I have let the band know that they need to work on there instruments.
The bass did have a buzz when we were recording. He really wanted to use his ampeg head. I suggested going DI but that didn't go over to well.
I totally agree on the toms and snare. There is nothing that can help that snare besides a different snare.
The guitar also got on my nerves.
The band had a little trouble leaving there ego at the door. I made some suggestions but they just wanted to record and rushed into it.
Two of them said they have been in studios before which i'm not so sure I believe now.
There going to come back and try again so well see how that goes.
I'm going to try messing around with the recording again just for fun. I will post it later. Turd Polishing starts now.

Usually the biggest impediment to a band sounding good are themselves! I call it "shooting yourself in the foot."
Good luck, I've been there MANY times. The only way as an AE to get your way is to pull out something from your back catalogue that sounds phenom and say "well on this album we did so-and-so..." and see if they change their mind.
