First Panel Done

Didnt take long at all. Maybe and hour. Next ones will be quicker. I will assembly line them. Im using 2" Roxul 60 panels (2' x 4'). For the lumber I used 1x3 premium furing strips (Lowes). I cut those at 4' for the sides and 25 1/2" for the top and bottom. I joined those by utilizing a corner clamp and 1 1/2" drywall screws. I pre-drilled and c'sank the holes for a flush finish. I then rounded all sharp edges. Next I stretched and stapled the burlap (JoAnn Fabrics). Then I placed the Roxul panels in. They were a nice tight fit. When I was at Lowes I bought some 24" insulation hangers. I thaught they would be over 24 " wide, and went ahead and got them. Well they are exactly 24". They are designed for 24" on center building applications and are put in between the joists (with a bow in them) to hold up insulation. So I was thinking at least 25". Nope !!! But I got them to work by drilling some holes for them to stick into the corners. The next one I will staple some old 1/8" molding I have onto the inside (at 3 places) to shrink the inside dimension so I can put the wires straight across. I will post a pic of the next one. I am making 16 of these (1/2 black and 1/2 white) to go with the red walls in the control room. The black ones I am going to paint the wood edge facing out black. You can see from the picture the wood showing through. Anyway, Im gonna head back out and get some more done. Here are some pics

That looks awesome! Great job! Are you going to do any thicker ones as bass traps?

Yea, 4" ones in the corners. I guess the hard part will be hanging them. I will have to ask my wife to help, (I hate doing that). You married guys understand :)
 
All the wood is cut. I have built a framing jig to make it go quicker. Hope to have all the frames done in a couple hours (16 frames).

Biggest PITA ever.


I would up using toggle bolts and baling wire. YMMV.
 
Im thinking the same for those and the ceiling ones. The wall panels, I think I will use the aluminum hangers (one mounts to panel and other to wall) that are used mainly for large mirrors. Here are some more pics. I have all the frames together. Took a couple hours, not to bad. I will stretch the burlap on them tomorrow.

if you don't mind disclosing, how much (ball park figure) does it cost for all the materials to do these?
i'm on a pretty tight budget (being married with a kid) and being the sole provider for the fam... i have to convince the Mrs it's worth it (haha)

I will post the per panel price as soon as I can. I still need to buy mounting hardware. I will pm you and post the price here. Roughly I thinking $16 to $20 each. Final will probably be less. I still have lumber left over. So I over figured the wood aspect. I may use the left over wood to make wedge locks to hang the wall panels. I can rip it into smaller pieces then use my router and 45 degree the edges of it. Place two on the panel (top and bottom) and two on the wall. The 45 degree angles pull tight and lock the units in place.

Same here man. My son is 8 months old, and my wife just now got a part time job, so all equipment buying (barring really really cheap stuff and an ebayed guitar with my bonus from work) has been on hold for over a year :-(

it definitely seem the way to go, to build my own...

did you buy everything except the frames from ATS Acoustics?
do you think with the same construction method you used they'd work also for clouds... or for replacing 24x48 ceiling tiles... although i guess the frame would need to be smaller for that...

I bought the lumber from Lowes, fabric from JoAnns ($1.99 yard on sale), its regular price is $2.99 per yard, the panels from ATS Acoustics (very quick shipping). I had the screws, I bought a bucket of them when I did the drywall in the studio. But a box of 100 screws is $2.00 or less. The hardware Im getting ready to go look at and get. I need some sand paper too. The fabric is on of the main costs. ATS Acoustics list its burlap at $7 per yard, way too much. Anyway, I need to hit Walmart then start to stretch burlap. Will update tonight.

As far as ceiling tiles. As long as you wire it up good enough, it will work. I will be putting 4 up (one each wall) against the ceiling on an angle. Those will be hanging. My ceiling is 10' so I think just those will work. Maybe I should place a couple on the ceiling ? Any thaughts on that ?
 
I have 4" (rockwool 4lbs) in front corners and rear wall/ceiling."Waterfalls" on REW was pretty good, but things started to be really good after I put clouds above monitors and my mix position.I have 2 2' x 4' clouds (one 6" and one 8", but 2lbs rockwool,if they fall, I won´t die:D), and frequencie response and image are better now... (room is small, 11 x 9,2 x 8,6)

can i ask what you're using for the fabric covering young fellow me lad?

i'm going to have to get my shit together and build some panels :cool:
 
i was also wondering about fabrics. i am currently making a couple of traps and i found one place that had burlap at $8.00 a yard!! that is way too expensive. are there other types of fabric that will do the job just as well and also that are maybe a little less rough? i thought this would be a good time to ask this question and not seem like i am hijacking your thread.
 
If I'm not mistaken, you can use any fabric that you can hold against your mouth a breath without restriction, but has to be covering enough so the particles of material don't go airborne. Take this with a grain of salt since I'm still learning about this too.
