OK I had the bright idea of posting the instrumental version of this song here to get some EQ and panning advice before the vocalist comes out to do her part. The finished version will have a vocal in the middle so take that into account.

All music is composed and played by myself apart from the drums. The bass player never showed up today so I had to do his part, apologies if its a bit rough, but I am alot more interested in advice on the above than comments on the performance or volume level on tracks. Having said that, if anybody wants to give contructive (or uncons.) critisicm on this I would be pretty interested...and don't worry, I have a thick skin !

How about it Ed\Sjoko\Bruce\QQ ?

I want to allow everything to 'breathe' nicely, this was done tonight for the purpose of asking your advice, so alot of the tracking will be redone.

Thanks alot,

pAp

If you have any problems streaming or downloading please let me know.

Thanks

Please ? C'mon folks, some of you listened to that Hump song ! Anyway, it would really help me out.

Sorry for being pushy, but I promised the band I'd have the demo ready for mastering two months ago...

and this is the first track I've started :(

Although I'm not one of the people listed in your post I took a listen to your track....

As far as EQ'ing....it sounded like the whole mix was muddy...a lot of low end from the bass, guitar, keys and occasionally the kick drum all sort of muddling and cancelling each other out. Try EQ'ing the respective instrumentation to favor their own frequencies ....the bass= low end....the gutar= mid and high...the keys are gonna cover a lot of ground so it depends what part of the keyboard track you'd want to favor or bring out. Panning should help to isolate the instruments in the mix even if they might occassionally be flooding the same frequency...but try to minimize having each instrument "stepping" on each other frequency-wise.

oh....and bring the drums up....EQ and pan them also (even pan the individual toms etc. if you have that capability...) Experiment!

Good tune....I'll be looking for that mix with the vocals on it

Ok, real quick. Increase by 1.5 dB of gain on 2.5K frequency on the kick drum. The Bass needs to be CUT around 250 Hz, with a high-pass filter.

It sounded good on my ns10ms. It is has slightly less hihg frequency content than most other mixes.

I think the bass needs to be eq to be clear and mayb not ubstruct as much.

THe song is cool by the was. Great drumming, great instrumentation . I also like the guitars.

peace

Thanks for the help

Exactly what I needed :)

MAC2 : Yeah, spot on about the kick drum cancellation and the keys. I removed ALOT of bottom from the main keyboard bit and it sound alot better in the mix. I'd love to be able to pan the toms but I only have a mic input on my soundcard and I doesn't seem to be stereo. Anyway, cheers !

frank_1 : I recorded the drumer through four channels in my mixer into one mono track in Cool Edit, so I can't apply this to the bass drum alone. Would this improve the clarity of the bass drum ? I am going to try your bass suggestion as it definately needs something done to it. Anyway thanks.

Cyanjaguar : Yeah the bass is bothering me a bit, it doesn't sound right, and its not only my playing. I'll see if frank_1's suggestion helps. Thanks for the comments :)

You need to boost the SNATCH on the snare and then cut the BALLS off of the kick a little bit. Raise the CUNT LIP just a HAIR and everything should be fine.

I have to say that its pretty good! I really like the break that comes in at 1:26. And the organ is awesome, but maybe could be a little brighter. WHat are you using anyway? SOunds good whatever it is. Looking foward to the finished project.

I listened to the first song (was there 2)..the instrumental..
Its hard to tell details about EQ because you cant tell what mp3 conversion did to it....but I took it and dropped ALOT between 300-350hz on the mix....between 10-20db.....also I took out some of the lows on the mix around 80hz , around 10db and it still had balls......

However Id start by taking a big scoop of 350hz out of the bass and kick.....then Id have everything except the kick and bass taper off around 200hz...maybe even 300hz....

I also added some highs to the mix but thats probably lost from mp3 conversion...good song.....kinda Doobie Brothers-ish

a band from around here has similiar sound....
