For the sake of keeping it short, I'll just cut to the chase. I have a degree in Electronics Engineering so not much is really "Over my head", but this is my first adventure in making an attempt to do some home recording. I have a laptop running a 32-bit version of Windows 7, 3Gb ram, plenty of space. I play a full on, set neck Dimebag signature Dean, I have a Behringer U-Control UMA25S (for which I would like to make my own custom drum patterns/loops/fills with, then record multiple guitar tracks over and so on). I also use a Digitech GNX4 workstation for my guitar effects.

I have licenced, working copies of Rectify and Audacity that came with the UMA25S, but I don't have the Ableton Live software that was supposed to come with it, (it was bought used).

My question is, or rather yet, my questions are:

1)Is anyone able to direct me to a site where I could learn to use these things together to do what I want for them to do? Though I haven't figured out how to use it yet, I'm sure that by connecting the GNX4 to the computer via USB, I should be able to begin laying (or playing around with) guitar tracks.

2)What opinions do you have on Drum programs such as EZDrummer? Is that something I would even need in order to make some solid drum tracks to just play along with and be creative?

3)Is there any type of equipment I would need, hardware or software, before being able to do some simple recording. I plan on doing some recording here and there to dvd-r's, but that is only for reasons of keeping the hard drive as clean as I can.

Any advice that any of you could give would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I probably have all I'd need to make some pretty decent "Demo quality" recordings, which is what I'm after...minus the actual demo. You couldn't pay me enough to be famous...even if I had the talent. There's just no price tag on a persons personal life, ya' know? I just enjoy making music. If I happen to write a song and let a buddy listen to it, it'd be cool to hear if they thought it kicked ass or if it just sucked. I'm just kind of scratching my head as to how to get started with the gear that I have, and don't even know where to go to do the reading I'd need to do to teach myself.

I don't know what Rectify is, but Audacity is not DAW software. It's also free, so there is no licence. Investigate something like Reaper.

I use Addicitve Drums and Steven Slate Digital 4 for drums. The former is easier to use, the latter sounds better. You get out what you put in - you can get good realistic druim tracks, but it takes practice and work and tweaking.

In terms of equipment you'll need an audio interface and with only 3 GB of RAM you may struggle to do "big" projects. As you only have 32 bit Windows, you can only go to 4GB anyway, but probably worth doing. Processor speed and disk drive speed are a factor too... provide some information on your computer.

As for where to go, you're already here, but I'd tend to hang about in the Newbies forum at the start and get all your basic questions covered there... such as "why can't I record to dvd-r?".... archive yes, record no...

Welcome to the nuthouse... :D

Right on, and thanks a lot. Believe it or not, when I logged back in I first noticed the Newbies forum and thought right away that I might have posted in the wrong spot.

Anyhow, thanks again...and so the adventure begins.
