First interface for drums

Do you already have an interface. Depending on the interface it may be able to act as a bridge but I doubt it.

Being new myself, I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread. My brother and I are starting our own personal studio (looking to branch out once we obtain the necessary skills) and we picked up a lot of preowned gear, including a Digidesign Digi 002 rack which only has four mic pre-amps. I'm glad to see low-cost options brand new that could add at least eight additional mic pre-amps. The Tascam one looks solid.

Oh yeah, it's great! I've got one, and I love it!

That (Tascam 1641) is what I'll be acquiring(sp?) in about a month.

wait can someone clear this up for me?

so if i only get an interface, its useless because i dont have preamps?
and if i get one that has preamps(like the tascam) i'll be fine? like just plug in my mics and record?

The interface is not useless. A lot of them are linked with recording software, so you wouldn't be able to even operate certain software (i.e. Pro Tools) without a required interface. I thought the same thing until I realized the Digi Rack I bought is actually necessary, even if I have some huge mixing board with 24 tracks, to operate Pro Tools. The Digi Rack I got is pretty much mounted onto a shelf and something like the Behringer or Tascam products shown add additional pre-amps and are also rack-mountable. It all really depends on how many tracks you need to record at any given time. For instance, as a drummer, I could indeed use four tracks minimum (two overheads, kick, snare) but that's not enough control in the mix for me. I need SIX pre-amps (two overheads, kick, snare, rack tom, floor tom) to get the job done.

It really depends on what you're using and what your needs are.
