Hey fellas,

I've been making tunes on my PC now for about two years, mostly psuedo electronic stuff, not very aucoustic, unfortunately I'm not extremely proficient with any instrument, can play a tiny bit of acoustic guitar/bass and some piano/keyboard. Anyways, I've found that it's almost impossible to get really fat, warm bass sounds out of any keyboard (I use the Triton Pro) or sound module, let alone the scads of samples found on the net or within programs I've been using. So I've decided to go out and get me a bass and start learning how to give my tunes a solid backbone. My question is what brand/bass would you guys recomend for a beginner that is going to give an extremely fat, warm sound? I've got around $250, is that a feasible price range? Think e-bay's the place to go? Also, as I said I'm into electronic stuff, mostly downtempo ambient stuff, so I was also wondering what kind of fx boxes/peddles you guys would use/recommend to get the sound even richer, warmer, fuller and/or to just plain make some bizare ambient sounds. I own Korg's Kaoss pad which is a very useful tool that fucks with guitar sounds and will undoubtedly do some damage w/ the bass but was just wondering what other fx there are out there dedicated solely to the bass. And just out of curiousity, any of y'all play a fretless? Are they ridiculously expensive and/or hard to learn? Sorry about the excess amounts of questions, and thanks alot in advance for any advice!

Thats exactly the bass i recomend on a budget! The Yamaha's are really nice budget basses they play like a bass of twice thier price! Hey no need to get any fx to make some wierd nosies u can always use the fx on ur computer cant u! But if u want a decent fx box for a bass it got to be the line 6 bass pod! Check out the line 6 web page! :)

Before you buy a bass-
Have you tried using compression on your keyboard bass sounds? I know a real bass is better but if you use synth bass you want to process it like you would a real bass. You will get a much more better tone.

Just something to try :)

compression may help, but theres nothing like the feel you get with a real bass....the slides, small bends, vibrato, just the overall fell, help give the tracks a real groove....esp. if using canned drums.....

Agreed Gidge, my primary motivation. Will try though Tex.

Hey thanks for all the ideas fellas, all look beautiful and within my $range. Now how bout some fx box ideas?!?

RE bass effects,

Someone here recomended the Zoom 507 II as being good for recording along with some good effects.

I bring this up because electric bass into your computer (or any recording media) will not be fat and warm without a good preamp or DI box. Bass is my main instrument and getting that good warm fat tone to tape is deceptively challenging. I finally got there with a Sans Amp and a Tube Pac. I do have the 507 but have not recorded with it, I have only used it live.

I play some fretless and if you have not played any instruments before stay fretted at first. Fretless has a long learning curve but they can sound awesome.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

Thanks scooter b, gonna go and dig up some reviews/specs on that puppy. You know if it can be used to f*ck up random sounds from my trusty Triton and create some really weird sounds or if it's just going to be dedicated to the bass. I make electronic, ambient tunes so the weirder, warmer, the better. Looks like I'm probably going to go with the RBX260, though it will probably be a month or so until I get it.

Thanks alot guys, knew you'd be a big help!
